City’s Christmas present not ready...
With the building and construcƟon industry already closed for at least one month
for the Christmas holiday recess, it seems that the long-awaited compleƟon of
the infamous Bergsig crossing on the corner of Helen Joseph Drive and Boven
Street in uptown Rustenburg is heading towards disappointment. Though much
progress has been made during recent months, the project was earmarked for
compleƟon by mid November 2014. This project is now very likely to more than
just one man’s New Year’s resoluƟon. This photograph was taken shortly aŌer

heading home. (Photograph: Waldie Volschenk).

were found on the back seat of the vehicle.
RUSTENBURG HERALD – RUSTENBURG – The South African Government has
taken note of the decisions by two rating agencies. This comes shortly after ratings
agency Fitch surprised markets by not downgrading its credit view of South Africa
on Monday, 15 December.
“Government recognises the need to
steer South Africa’s economic growth
trajectory onto a more robust course.
Important structural reforms are underway
in major economic sectors that will boost the
economy’s growth,” said National Treasury
this week.
Rating agency Standard and Poor’s (S&P)
on Friday affirmed South Africa’s long- and
short-term foreign currency sovereign
credit ratings at “BBB- / A-3”. The agency
also affirmed the local currency ratings at
“BBB+/ A-2” and maintained a stable outlook
on the rating. Meanwhile Fitch’s decision
retains South Africa’s rating two levels into
investment grade.
However, Fitch is of the view that South
Africa’s twin budget and current account
deficits are leading to rising public and
external debt ratios, while weak economic
growth is constraining living standard and the
capacity to improve social conditions as well
as stabilizing public finances.
Government said the Medium Term
Strategic Framework (MTSF) sets out
government’s actions over the next five years.
The MTSF plans target a thriving business
sector and a strong civil society. As a result,
growth enhancing initiatives and programmes
aimed at improving the competitiveness of
the renewable energy sector and sustaining
job creation are prioritised.

He was briefing reporters at the last post

He said government will also play its part by
leading a range of campaigns such as Healthy

Mayor’s Christmas Message
That time of the year has arrived where families come together to celebrate
the Festive season. It is the season to show love, giving to needy, showing
compassion and most of all to forgive. We are aware of the excitement that is
brought by the Christmas period into the society.
I therefore would like to appeal to motorists and pedestrians to take extra
care on the roads.
Let us make this Christmas special by reducing road fatalities. Let us all
obey the traffic rules to enable us to arrive alive at our destination. We have
observed a high level of criminal activities because most people will be
away. We call upon our communities to be vigilant and report any suspicious
activities to the Police. We must show that we do care for each other by
protecting the properties of your fellow neighbour.

“Farm murders
border on genocide”
World Platinum Investment Council
launches independent analysis
RUSTENBURG HERALD - Rustenburg At a press conference at the Transvaal Agricultural Union
on the 5th of December, Dr Gregory Stanton, Founding President of Genocide Watch, warned
that early warnings of genocide are still deep in South African society, though genocide has not
begun.
Dr Stanton was deeply involved in the Civil
Rights Movement in the United States, worked
against Apartheid with the United Democratic
Front in 1989 – 1990 as a Fulbright Professor of
Law at the University of Swaziland, and was the
author of the UN Resolutions that created the
International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in 1994.
He was also the legal advisor to the government
of Cambodia and drafted the rules for the Khmer
Rouge Tribunal. He founded Genocide Watch and
the International Alliance to End Genocide in 1999.
The Alliance now has fifty member organizations
in 24 countries.
Genocide Watch was the first international
human rights organization to protest the murders
and hate crimes committed against farmers in
South Africa. Since his research trip in July 2012,
Dr. Stanton said that hate crimes against Afrikaner
farmers have not declined. TAU puts the figure
at 130 murders per 100,000 in 2013, one of the
Professor Gregory Stanton, Research
Professor at the George Mason University’s School for Conflict Analysis and
Resolution based in Arlington, Virginia,
USA paid a visit to his friend, Rustenburg based businessman Leon Parkin
and to discuss strategies to curb the
high farm murder rate in SA.

highest murder rates in the world.
Several years ago Julius Malema, then
President of the African National Congress Youth
League, revived the singing of the “Kill the Boer,
Kill the farmer” song, once a revolutionary song,
but now an incitement to commit genocide. A South
African judge declared that singing of the song is
hate crime and prohibited Malema from singing
the “Kill the Boer” song. Both Julius Malema and
President, Jacob Zuma, sang the “Kill the Boer”
song, according to Dr Stanton.
Dr Stanton noted that recent studies of the
correlation between corruption and atrocities
committed by governments show that the relationship
is direct. Once in power, corrupt governments cling
to power because of the enormous wealth their
officials amass. They then persecute, torture, and
murder anyone who challenges their grip on power.
That downward spiral has begun in South Africa,
just as it did in Zimbabwe. The crime conviction rate
has dropped from 32 percent ten years ago to about
22 percent today. This trend must be reversed. An
honest, educated, and dedicated police force is the
strong arm of justice.
Private security companies should coordinate
their systems, use infra-red, aerial and other
advanced technology to detect criminals quickly
and summon both armed private security
companies and police to arrest criminals. Then
their cases must be pressed until they are
imprisoned. Criminal gangs from other African
countries should be deported.
Some 30 000 commercial farmers supply most
of South Africa’s food. South Africa cannot afford
to lose these men’s experience in management.
The first step is for the South African government
to admit that farm murders are a serious threat
not just to Afrikaner and white farmers, but to all
South Africans, and make stopping these crimes
a priority. The second step is to arrest and convict
or impeach corrupt political leaders. South Africa
needs effective security for all of its people.
Without security, democracy is impossible, Dr
Stanton said.

Canned hunting, cub petting ties
The Editor,
I recently read an article in the national press which
refers to a campaign created against the act of canned
hunting. The activist group behind the campaign raise
some very important issues regarding the canned hunting
and its ties to lion cub petting.
Many of your readers will be familiar with tourist
attractions which allow visitors to come into close contact
with wildcats, including lions, and the campaigners
against such institutions point out that a lion which comes
into such close contact with humans at an early age
cannot simply be let into the wild.
One tourist attraction in particular was pointed out
which has become a well-known destination for those
looking to have a close encounter with these animals
when visiting our country. But is enough being done to
make tourists aware of the canned hunting business.
I recently read a quote which states that anyone
touching a lion cub is indirectly contributing to the
canned hunting industry. Perhaps we could have some
more information on the affects that cub petting has on
lion cubs and the apparent ties between petting and the
canned hunting industry.
I am sure there are many such institutions around
Rustenburg that may be interesting in joining this debate.
Concerned about cubs
Away with Olympia Park!
The Rustenburg’s Municipality’s continuous lack of understanding and consideration for residents in the
vicinity of Olympia Park “Sports” Stadium is not only disappointing, but alarming. This past weekend,
residents in the entire Rustenburg West and large areas of Protea Park and Geelhoutpark had to put up
with an outrageous racket throughout Saturday night until the early (or rather late one should say) hours
of Sunday morning.
At was not a moment before 05:00 on Sunday morning
that outrageously loud music and amplified shouting and
“chanting” eventually subsided and residents in the area
could finally put in a few hours of sleep after an exercise
that could only be described as exhausting.
One wonders how on earth the Rustenburg Municipality
could continue the casual leasing out of Olympia Park
Sport Stadium for events of this nature. Is it a drive to earn
extra revenue in time for the Christmas holiday period,
or does the municipality argue that this kind of “circus” is
actually welcomed by the majority of the community and
that this is ideal to lift the spirits on the eve of the holiday
recess.
For those of us who have actually experienced this type
of uproar, the Rustenburg Municipality’s blatant disrespect
for people’s rights and privacy in allowing a public riot
virtually on the doorsteps of thousands of people in a
residential area(s) is nothing less than shocking. And to
add to the insult - this “see who cares” attitude displayed
by the Rustenburg Municipality in continuing with this, is
indeed in direct contrast with the notion of reconciliation
which was celebrated on Tuesday, this week. In fact,
whatever was going on at Olympia Park last weekend
have done much more damage to the idea of reconciliation
between cultures than the possible good a dozen public
holidays in celebration of “a Day of Reconciliation” could
ever bring about. The blatant disrespect for other people’s
cultures, traditions and a civilisation of standards and
values, is an insult to all people who have had to put up
with this for the umpteenth time during recent months and
years. Shame on you?
For crying out loud - Olympia Park is a Sports Stadium
virtually in the centre of a (respected?) residential areas
- why not reserve it for sporting codes exclusively. Who
are the gentlemen women making Olympia Park available
for a public uproar every now and then. Surely if the
Rustenburg Municipality wishes to continued with this
ever again, it should conduct a public “Environmental
Impact Assessment” as is always so easily required from
whoever wants to put up or actually “develop” something.
Why should the Rustenburg Municipality be exempt for
respecting the rights of its very own tax payers - this is
ridiculous!
But then we must add, repeated calls in the columns
of Rustenburg Herald on the Rustenburg Municipality to
immediately seize these demonstrations/music shows/
DJ battles/gospel shows/church services/ or unbelievably
loud public riots at Olympia Park have been similarly and
blatantly ignored by the Rustenburg Municipality. We
now call on our premier - Mr Supra Mahumaphelo and
his Executive to intervene and make and end to this once
and for all.
Sondagoggend by Olimpiapark aangebied is.
Rustenburg” hierdie byeenkomste verwelkom?
se soveelste “sirkus” by Olympiapark was, is die
vandeesweek landswyd gevier is.
versoening wil bewerkstellig...?
by die Rustenburgse Munisipaliteit bring - asseblief - hierdie
is ‘n openbare
wees.
by Olimpiapark wat letterlik duisende mense in ‘n modern
(Viewpoint by Waldie Volschenk, 13 Coetzer Street, Rustenburg).

Golf challenge raises over R20
million for golf development
RUSTENBURG HERALD - JOHANNESBURG The Nedbank Golf Challenge’s (NGC) golf development fundraiser, The
Sports Trust Golf Challenge has raised over R20 million towards the transformation and development of the sport in
South Africa since 1999. The event, which takes place the day after the NGC, encourages corporates to compete against
each other to raise funds, which are distributed to leading golf development organisations namely: the South African

Golf Development Board (SAGDB) and the South African
Disabled Golf Association (SADGA).
Four of SAGB’s development graduates will be competing
against corporate representatives at this year’s challenge.
One of them is Zethu Myeki, a 21 year old female golfer from
Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape. “As a young golfer, I watch the
NGC every year to learn from professional golfers so that I can
enhance my game,” says Zethu who won several tournaments
in 2013 and 2014. “Playing on the same course as professional
golfers is certainly a fulfilment of a lifelong dream.”
The SAGDB and SADGA work with and are endorsed
by Sports and Recreation South Africa to contribute to the
transformation of the sport. The SAGDB identifies and nurtures
talented players from disadvantaged communities across the
country to give them the best chance to compete against their
more fortunate peers. Since its inception in 1999, the SAGDB
has coached over 17 000 youngsters, produced one senior
national player and four players in the senior national squad,
25 senior provincial and under 23 players as well as 108 junior
provincial players.
Over 1 500 players have participated in junior golf
tournaments and 34 of its most talented players have been
invited to join prestigious and recognised High Performance
Centres such as the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation. Six
former SAGDB players have earned their tour cards on the
Sunshine Tour.
“As SAGDB, we believe that moral, educational and socioeconomic upliftment is vital to South Africa’s future. By making
golf more accessible and more appealing, the SAGDB is
recruiting South Africans to a sport that teaches an integral set
of ethical rules and values, which can be applied in all spheres
in life,” says SAGDB’s Managing Director Grant Hepburn.
SADGA encourages and promotes every South African with
a disability to play and enjoy golf. “The gift of hope is the most
precious gift adults can give children. If you combine exposure
to activities they thought would never be possible, it really makes
for something special,” says Eugene Vorster, CEO of SADGA.

“The Sports Trust, Nedbank and Sun International have given
hope and invaluable exposure to so many disabled children to
various life orientational activities through golf. Teaching them
to count and at the same time being accountable is a life skill
that will stand them in good stead.”
Both The Sports Trust and the Nedbank Sport Affinity
Programme celebrate 20 years of existence this year. The
Sports Trust was established by private and public organisation
to increase access and opportunities to all sports codes for all
South Africans. The Nedbank Affinity Programme includes a
suite of banking and investment products. When clients use
these products, the bank makes a donation to The Sports Trust
at no cost to them.
Anita Mathews, Executive Director of The Sports Trust, says:
“We have witnessed how golf has changed the lives of children
and youth through their drive and determination to succeed. It
has empowered them to live healthier and disciplined lives.”
Maseda Ratshikuni, Head of Cause Marketing at Nedbank,
says the bank is proud to be associated with the Sports Trust
Golf Challenge. “As a bank for all, we are pleased to nurture
the interest and participation of all South Africans in golf. Sport
development is one of our corporate social investment focus
areas as it fosters a cohesive society. We play an active role in
ensuring that we not only educate our children in classrooms,
but also actively through sport.”
“The ongoing success of the NGC is closely aligned to the
commitment of Sun International and Sun City to hosting an
event that ensures financial, social and ecological sustainability.
As a founding trustee of The Sports Trust, along with Nedbank,
we are proud to continue making a contribution to sports
development throughout South Africa. The Sports Trust Golf
Challenge is the true success of the NGC, because of its ability
to make an impact beyond just the actual tournament,” says
Alastair Roper, Tournament Director NGC, Sun International.
In addition to the challenge, Nedbank together with the Sports
Trust, have invested over R20 million to the development of
other sport codes such as soccer, road running and cycling.
