From the Principal’s Desk
Dear IHS Learning Community Members:
“May your walls know joy, may every room hold laughter, and every window open to great possibility.”
~ Mary Anne Radmacher
Let me begin by wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season! It is incredible to think we’re well into the second
marking period of the school year already. Our students are positioned to build on the positive results from the first
marking period when 33% of our students earned honor roll status and 26% achieved high honor recognition.
As mentioned in the last IHS Newsletter, one of our jobs is to provide our students a 21st century curriculum aligned with
professionally developed standards and rigorous coursework. Through student centered learning experiences, our teachers
are providing students opportunities to build important and necessary skills to be college and career ready upon
graduation. Our goal is for students to develop critical thinking skills. Students need to be able to make meaning and
transfer knowledge and skills to new contexts. The use of complex text and textual evidence allows students to establish
and justify claims and arguments verbally, in writing and through discourse.
A few important notes…
We are fast approaching the midpoint of the school year which means midterm exams are just around the corner.
Midterm week will occur from January 26-30, 2015. Midterm week provides our students an environment that
replicates the high-stakes Regents examination setting that students experience in June. It also provides our teachers
with important data on student progress so they can plan future instruction accordingly. Please encourage your
student to take advantage of review opportunities.
It’s course selection time for 2015-16. Students currently in grades 8-11 are preparing to choose their courses for the
next school year. Students recently brought home their initial course preferences for parents to sign and will be
meeting with counselors to select courses in the coming weeks. Parents are encouraged to contact counselors with
questions regarding their student’s 4-year plan, elective and college-level course opportunities and graduation
requirements. The course catalog is available on our Website and Course Selection Information Night will be held
on January 12th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.
We are committed to academic excellence while fostering an atmosphere of respect, responsibility, and positive
relationships through our IHS community values. Please feel free to contact me at any time during the school year
through a personal appointment, via the phone (585-336-2911) or e-mail ([email protected]). I am
confident that by working together, we can ensure the success of your IHS student.
Partners in education,
Douglas W. Lauf

DECA NEWS
Students recently finished competing in the first challenge of
the Virtual Business DECA Sports, Retail and Restaurant
competition. These are DECA (www.deca.org ) competitive
events that have students making business decisions on a
computer in a simulated business environment.
Marissa Tortora and Samantha Miller made decisions in
their Retail event that required analysis on purchasing,
expired goods, demographics, marketing research data, store
floor layout, shoplifting, back-room inventory and cash
register management. At the end of four weeks, the Tortora/
Miller team was ranked first in the country out of 1,090
teams. This performance has earned them an opportunity to
compete at the DECA International Career Development
Conference in April and a chance to win $1,000.
In the Virtual Business Sports event, teammates Nick
Charles, TyReek Sizer and Charlie Eblacker analyzed
market research data to establish ticket prices within their
stadium for each home game and determined what other
events would be profitable during the season (like concerts)
to maximize profits. Over their four-week competition they
finished first in the nation out of 1,651 teams and will also
compete at the DECA International Career Development
Conference (ICDC) in April and have a chance to win
$1,000.
It is also noteworthy that Megan Giamartino and Kiersten
Pease wer e fir st in New Yor k State in the Restaur ant
simulation competition.

AP COURSES
AP courses are linked directly to the AP exams, and
all enrolled students are required to challenge the
exams. These courses and exams provide each child
with the opportunity to experience the rigors of
college in a supportive high school setting, as well as
provide them with the opportunity to earn college
credit. Typically, over 70% of our students score 3, 4
or 5 on the exams and thereby qualify for college
credit. The cost of a college credit far exceeds the
$91.00 fee. District policy requires participating
students to cover the $91.00 cost of each Advanced
Placement exam. You will be receiving a detailed
letter specific to your child in February.

Emergency Closing Procedures
West Irondequoit Central
School Cancellation
There may be times, due to adverse weather or
other emergencies, when it will be necessary
to close one or more schools. In order to
inform the community, the district will contact
parents via our automated phone system using
numbers provided by families at the start of
the school year. We will also alert major
television and radio stations (Channels 8, 9,
10 & 13), WHAM 1180 AM, and WXXI
1370 with details of the situation.
Now Look What I’ve Done!
If the determination to close is made before
the opening of school in the morning, every
effort will be made to notify families by 6:00
a.m. There may be occasions when the start of
school is delayed, and this would also be
communicated to families. For example, a one
-hour delay would mean that schools would
open one hour later than the normal schedule.
Buses would pick students up one hour later.
The school day would end at the regularly
scheduled time and afternoon kindergarten
hours would not be affected.
School Closing – During the Day
Should it be necessary to close school during
the day, the district will take actions to ensure
the safety of children and staff and the parents
would be notified using our automated phone
system. The following procedures will apply:
9-12: Students (except handicapped students
requiring transportation) who feel that they
can reach their destinations safely will be
dismissed. All other students will remain in
school until satisfactory arrangements can be
made.
Please review with your children, neighbors
and relatives the plans you have pre-arranged,
should an early dismissal or emergency school
closing occur. It is crucial that parents
understand the emergency notification
procedures we are using and that you think
about how you and your children will respond
under these rare conditions. We appreciate
your efforts to keep your child’s emergency
plan up-to-date as family schedules and
circumstances change.

TIPS FOR PARENTS
As parents, it is important to be aware of the messages associated with everything from clothing to items in popular culture.
Staying connected allows you to have conversations with your children about what is popular and helps you to stay informed
about what your children may be identifying with.
Numerous inquiries have risen from parents regarding the Diamond Supply Company’s clothing. One of the questions we
encounter frequently is: Is the clothing drug related? The attire that the company produces ranges from hats, tees, sweatshirts,
and socks, to shoes and book bags. The items are sold at numerous stores including skate shops, teen clothing stores, and are
easily accessible on the Internet.
As indicated by the visuals attached to this article, Diamond Supply Company produces a significant amount of clothing attire
that indicates marijuana use/getting high. Some is subtle. Some is not. And not all the attire features drugs.
Obviously not everyone who wears Diamond Supply Company attire uses drugs or is aware of the trend. But, the bottom line
is that this brand of clothing is associated with the culture of drug use and it is important to be aware of the messages
(intentional or not) that the clothing is sending.

Is Your Teen Vaping? The Dangers of E-Cigarettes
Vaping is the trendy term for using an electronic cigarette designed to deliver liquid nicotine with appealing fruity flavors and
other chemicals to users in vapor instead of smoke.
This new trend is marketed as a healthier alternative to regular smoking and is promoted as the newest smoking cessation tool.
Yet, there is no credible research that indicates these items are anything other than nicotine delivery systems, and may actually
be a new route to conventional smoking and nicotine addiction for teenagers. And, because e-cigarettes are not currently
marketed either as tobacco products or as devices having therapeutic purpose, they are not regulated by the FDA. There is
currently no regulation of the liquids that are used in e-cigarettes, so there are no accepted measures to confirm their purity or
safety.
Testing of some e-cigarette products found the vapor to contain known carcinogens and toxic chemicals (such a formaldehyde
and acetaldehyde), as well as potentially toxic metal particles from the vaporizing mechanism. Nicotine is a highly addictive
drug, and recent research suggests nicotine exposure may also prime the brain to become addicted to other substances. In other
words, e-cigarette use may serve as a “gateway” drug.
Most e-cigarettes consist of three different components, including a cartilage, which holds the liquid solution, a heating device
(vaporizer), and a power source (usually a battery.)
E- cigarettes look similar to traditional cigarettes. Vaporizers generally look less like cigarettes, are larger and more like a
fountain pen. The e-cigarette/vaporizer industry has quickly developed an abundance of products that appeal to teens: E-pens,
vape pens, e-Hookahs, hookah pens and twigs are some of the more popular nicknames. The bright iPod-like colors of these
devices appeal attractive to teens, and are readily available, cool, and tech-like. The Internet is the most common place of
purchase. But, vape stores and head shops are continuously cropping up in local suburbs and city locations.
The devices can be used for multiple purposes, including using to smoke hash oil (common names as Dabs, earwax, tar),
alcohol and marijuana solutions without the detectable odor.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey in September 2013 that showed the use of e-cigarette
experimentation and recent use among U.S. middle and high school students doubled from 2011 to 2012. Many of those
students had never used conventional cigarettes.
What can parents do?
Remember that an adolescent brain is more susceptible to nicotine than an adult brain, so this trend of rising use is something
to be taken very seriously. Here are some tips to help your continuous efforts:
* Research e-cigarettes/vaporizers on the Internet for images so you are clear about what they look like.
* Educate your kids that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance, a simulant, and dangerous drug.
They should know that cancer-causing chemicals are found in e-cigarette cartridges.
* Be clear that smoking of any kind is off limits.
