WATCHING FOR THE MESSIAH
Today’s Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing
and following Jesus sounds so simple and casual, it’s
easy to miss the significant acts of faith that are made.
John points to Jesus: “Look,” he says, “there is the
Lamb of God.” John’s faith in Jesus is evident, so evident
that John’s disciples immediately leave his side to follow
this Jesus.
The two disciples make their
own act of faith. They follow
Jesus, spend time with him, and
are quick to spread the good news
of their discovery: “We have
found the Messiah.”
It is easy to forget that the
expectations of generations, the
hopes of many ages of faithful people were being fulfilled
in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Nearly
everyone among the Jewish people was watching for the
Messiah back then; who in our own society watches for
signs of the presence of the Messiah today?

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT:
Christian Stewardship begins with the call to discipleship
and today’s readings offer three stories about discipleship.
In the Gospel, John the Baptist points to Jesus and two of his
followers immediately walk after Jesus. Jesus asks them:
“What are you looking for?” It is a very good question to
ask of ourselves. What is it we are looking for in Christ Jesus? What is it that we want by following Him? Is it that we
desire most urgently to be servants, stewards, of the Lord?
Or, do we want something else?

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES
1567-1622
Patron of Journalists and Writers
Francis de Sales was born on August 21, 1567 into a noble family in France. He was baptized Francis Bonaventura, after two great Franciscan saints. His father wanted him, the first of his six sons, to attend the best schools in
preparation for a career as a magistrate. He therefore enjoyed a privileged education. Francis was a patient man. He
knew for thirteen years that he had a vocation to the priesthood before he mentioned it to his family. When his father
said he wanted Francis to be a soldier and sent him to Paris to study, Francis said nothing. Then when he went to Padua
to get a doctorate in law, he still kept quiet, but he studied theology and practiced mental prayer while getting into
swordfights and going to parties. To please his father, he took lessons in the gentlemanly pursuits of riding, dancing,
and fencing. De Sales is described as intelligent and handsome, tall and well built with blue-grey eyes, somewhat reserved and quiet, and a welcome guest in the homes of the nobility among whom his father had connections. Even
when his bishop told Francis if he wanted to be a priest, that he thought he would have a miter waiting for him someday, Francis uttered not a word. Why did Francis wait so long? Throughout his life he waited for God’s will to be
clear. He never wanted to push his wishes on God.
God finally made His will clear to Francis while he was riding. Francis fell from his horse three times. Every
time he fell the sword came out of the scabbard. Every time it came out, the sword and scabbard came to rest on the
ground in the shape of the cross.
Francis became a priest during the Protestant reformation and lived just over the mountains from Switzerland—
Calvinist territory. For three years, Francis trudged through the countryside, sleeping on the ground or in haylofts when
he could, in an expedition to convert the 60,000 Calvinists back to Catholicism. Francis’ unusual patience kept him
working. No one would listen to him, no one would even open their door. So Francis wrote out his sermons, copied
them by hand and slipped them under the doors to communicate with the people. Francis went to the children. When
the parents saw how kind he was as he played with the children, they began to talk to him. By the time, Francis left to
go home he is said to have converted 40,000 people back to Catholicism.
In 1602 he was made bishop of the diocese of Geneva, in Calvinist territory and therefore closed to him.. He
only set foot in the city of Geneva twice and yet his diocese became famous throughout Europe for its efficient organization, zealous clergy and well-instructed laity, monumental achievements in those days.
It was in 1604 that Francis took one of the most important steps in his life, the step toward holiness and mystical union with God. He was asked by Jane de Chantal, a widow, to become her spiritual director. Not surprisingly,
Francis wanted to wait until he knew fully what God wanted. Jane was on a path to mystical union with God and in
directing her, Francis was compelled to follow her and become a mystic himself. Three years after working with Jane,
he finally made up his mind to form a new religious order. But where would they get a convent for their contemplative
Visitation nuns? A man, not knowing of the plans, told Francis he was thinking of donating a place for use by pious
women. Francis said nothing. When the man brought it up again, Francis still kept quiet. Finally the man offered
Francis the convent.
Francis was overworked and often ill because of the constant load of preaching, visiting and instruction. For
him active work did not weaken his spiritual inner peace but strengthened it. At that time, the way of holiness was only
for monks and nuns not for ordinary people. Francis changed all that by giving spiritual direction to lay people living
ordinary lives in the world. He had proven with his own life that people could grow in holiness while involved in a
very active occupation. His most famous book, “Introduction to the Devout Life” was written for these ordinary people
in 1608. Written originally as letters, it became an instant success all over Europe—though some preachers tore it up
because he tolerated dancing and jokes!
Francis taught the key to love of God is prayer. “By turning your eyes on God in meditation, your whole soul
will be filled with God. Begin all your prayers in the presence of God.” He advised people to retire into the “solitude
of your own heart” and talk to God even when you are engaged in activities with others. The test of prayer was a person’s actions according to Francis. His way of teaching Catholic spirituality is often referred to as the Way of Divine
Love or the Devout Life. Francis died as a result of a stroke on December 28, 1622, after giving a nun his last word of
advice: “humility.”

ATTENTION! ATTENTION!
SACRED HEART PARISH SUPPORTS ELDON
FOOD PANTRY
2014 SUMMARY:
Since February, 2014, Sacred Heart Parish has been
donating food monthly to the Eldon Food Pantry.
Through December approximately 1400 pounds was
donated in the parish name.
Jack and Mary Graessle and Gary and Doris Christoff repackaged the bulk food into smaller containers.
Ed and Barb Powell delivered it to the food pantry and
helped weekly with distribution. The total cost for this
food and packaging material was about $750, donated
by parishioners, and required about 70 labor hours including delivery.
2015 FOLLOW-ON PLANS:
We are praying that the donations of money and
workers will increase so that we can double our parish’s
food donation in 2015.
NOTE: The above excludes food and labor hours donated by parishioners and the monetary donations of the
Knights of Columbus throughout 2014.
If you have volunteered to be a Lector, Eucharistic Minister,
Usher or Altar Server please pick up the 2015 schedule in the
vestibule of church. They are in alphabetical order with the
family name on the outside of the envelope. Thank you.
