OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
“Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist,
the mission of St. Dismas Parish is to become a welcoming
community of faith, hope and charity by serving one another
in the name of Jesus Christ, thereby enabling our members
and the surrounding community to grow in their relationships with God and with one another.”

QUICK NOTES — FATHER PAT
1. This weekend we celebrate the feast of the
Epiphany, also known as the Three Kings.
In Catholic tradition we think of these wise
men as three kings since they offered royal
gifts to the baby Jesus on their visit. But perhaps the more important point of the story is
that the message of God’s love reaches beyond the Jewish people to all the world,
symbolized by the wise men who were not
Jewish. In our lives, we need reminders that
the love of God extends to all people, not just
those who measure up to our expectations.
2. Thanks again this year to the Knights of Columbus for their service to the poor and
needy of Waukegan. Their donation of a
couple dozen Thanksgiving and Christmas
dinners helped a number of our families.
Ken and Laurie were in charge of the distribution and they did it with their usual proficiency. Thanks to them and to the Knights of
the Waukegan Council.
3. Thanks to all who participated in our Giving
Tree this year. Through your generosity the residents of Terrace Nursing Home and Lake
Park Center had a little merrier Christmas.
4. We are having a meeting for all our catechists this Saturday, January 10, from 11:00
am—12 noon in the Rectory Conference
room. We hope to evaluate how this year’s
program is doing, and any concerns or ideas
you may have to improve it.
5. Also on Saturday from 3:00-6:00pm, a Virtus
training in Hunter Hall. All our catechists
and volunteers who work with children are
required by the Archdiocese to participate in
this training, The program helps us be
aware of how we can protect our children
from predatory behavior.
6. Tickets for the Men’s Club Chili Co o k o ff go
on sale after Masses this weekend, If you
like to be a participant, let Mary Ross know.

SPIRITUAL LIFE
YEAR OF SACRAMENTS
One Word at a Time
When Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River, a voice
from heaven says, “You are my beloved son in whom
I am well pleased.” Jesus’ heavenly Father names
him and identifies him as his beloved son. Our own
Baptism is also a naming. By tradition, we receive
our names at Baptism, the identity tag that stays with
us across a lifetime. There is, however, something
more and something much deeper at work than getting a tag.
In our Baptism we not only received our proper
names, but we are also, like Jesus, named God’s
beloved sons and daughters. And this means far
more than a name that appears
on a driver’s license or passport. This is the identity that
we cling to, and do so for dear
life. For you see, nothing
about us matters as much as
that we belong to God—not
just as his creatures or his
dependents but really and
truly as what we are named,
beloved daughters and sons.
2015 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC
APPEAL BEGINS
“Entrusted with Responsibility”
The 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway.
Many of our parishioners have received a mailing
from Archbishop Cupich. He asks that you make a
pledge to the 2015 A nnual Catholic A ppeal. Please
respond generously.
The Appeal supports both parish
and Archdiocesan ministries.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is Entrusted with
Responsibility. We each have a responsibility to
recognize God’s gifts to us and to nurture them.
As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also
reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial
support for the work of our parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in
fact, one way to express this gratitude.
As you review the mailing from Archbishop Cupich,
please note the ministries and services funded by the
Appeal, including the ones that directly support the
work of our parish. Then please give generously.
Note that when our parish reaches its goal of
$28,059 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional
funds received will be returned to us for use in our
parish.
The Annual Appeal at the parish kicks off the weekend of January 31/February 1.
GIVING TREE “THANK YOU”
To all the parishioners that participated in the Christmas Giving Tree a “BIG THANK YOU”. Your generosity and time brought joy to the residents of two
nursing homes.
Special thank you to co-chairperson Bev Joyce and
elves Chuck Joyce and Al Calcari for sorting and
delivering all the gifts.
Also a special thank you to Paris Presents for their
donation of women’s articles for the women’s shelters Safe Place and Staben House.
