Remembrance Ceremonies Classy
Students will receive their first report card of
semester 1 at an end of day homeroom on
Wednesday, November 26. It is important to
find the time to go over the report card with
your teen - pay attention to achievement marks
(letter grades) work habits grades (G-S-N) and
attendance (number of classes missed).
Celebrate successes and discuss plans for
improvement with your student. Beginning
Monday November 24, parents are encouraged
to go online at ‘SignUp Genius’ to book an
appointment to meet teachers on Dec. 3 from 24 pm & Dec. 4 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Sign-up
details will be posted on the school web site.
Congratulations to all the student and
staff organizers and participants for
creating
our
Remembrance
Day
ceremonies on Monday, November 10.
The 45-minute assemblies were dignified
and classy and provided our students with
an opportunity to reflect on the horrific
consequences of war as
well as appreciate the
tremendous
sacrifices
made
by
millions
of
Canadians, in the past and
today, that allow us to live
as freely as we do in this
safe
and
prosperous
country.
Special thanks to student
leaders involved as emcees and assembly
organizers:

Isaac Sy, Adrian Wee, Desmond
Wong, Janice Wong and Annie Yu.
Also, the student cadet flag party Ernest

Marcus Lau. Our appreciation also goes
to the very talented Steveston-London art
careers, choir, band and string quartet
students and our Shark Ambassadors.
Special guests included Canadian Forces
Logistics Officer Dean Pilkey, Board of
Education member Norm Goldstein, PAC
representative Lorna Lee and members of
the Minoru Seniors Centre. Thank you
also to Ms. Kwon, Mr. Akselrod and Mr.
Mikulin for organizing the ceremony.
All The World’s A Stage!
The Drama Club is hard at work preparing to
perform three episodes of
the
great
British
television show, "Fawlty
Towers". The impressive
cast and crew consists of
over 50 students and
rehearsals
occurring
during lunch and after school. The performances
open on December 9 at 7 p.m. in the theatre with all
three episodes being presented (A Touch of Class,
The Germans and Waldorf Salad). On December
10, there will be a performance of two episodes (A
Touch of Class and The Germans) at 1:30pm and all
three episodes in the evening at 7pm. On December
11, there is an afternoon performance of The
Germans and Waldorf Salad at 1:30. On Friday,
December 12, the closing night will feature all three
episodes. Anyone who remembers the television
show will know that these shows are bound to
provide lots of fun and laughs as we voyage to the
seaside hotel run by Basil and Sybil Fawlty! The
crew is still looking for a hospital gurney, a
wheelchair, a set of dishes, a set of wine glasses,
cutlery, suitcases and a copy of the Harold Robbins
novel, Never Love a Stranger. If you can help us,

Grade 8 Camp Awesome!
Support for Families in Richmond
Did you know there is a collaborative web site
dedicated to providing mental health support for
youth and families in the city of Richmond? A
number of agencies have pooled resources to
coordinate programs and ensure easy access to
services and this includes the Ministry of Children &
Family Development, Vancouver Coastal Health
(Richmond), Chimo Community Services, Family
Services of Greater Vancouver, Richmond Addiction
Services, B.C. Schizophrenia Society, Touchstone
Family Association and the Richmond School
District and Richmond Public Library. You can

We welcomed our youngest students to the "Shark family"
at a very successful Grade 8 Camp on October 22 to
October 24 near Cultus Lake in Chilliwack. Grade 8 Camp
is a wonderful tradition at Steveston-London, and over 230
Grade 8s and senior camp leaders were joined by SLSS staff
and shared 2 nights and 3 days of informative and fun
sessions including: tips for success in high school
(facilitated by third year UBC Sauder Business school
students and SLSS grads of 2012 Andrew Huang and
Janice Leung), team building, goal setting & being
organized, personal and social responsibility, leaving a
legacy and they learned what "care and respect" means at
Steveston-London. Most importantly, the Grade 8s also
had a lot of fun, formed some new friendships and began to
come together as a class - our grads of 2019! A sincere
thank you to our 32 very dedicated Grade 11 and 12
student-leaders who organized and led all aspects of the
camp; Pratik Bassi , Adrian Cheng, Jack Murakami,
Isaac Sy, Chris Girard, Saurev Jain, Matthew
Gazley, Calvin Chan, Thomas Westerman, Nicolas
Kong, Derek Jeary, Jacky Wong, Diego San Pedro,
Rio Wang, Kelly Jokanovich, Sherry Lynn, Nicole
Monk, Lauren Lee, Ankie Wong, Karina Jesson,
Kristy Cheung, Kaylyn Munro, Pearl Zhou, Nicole
Peryaslavsky, Janice Wong, Pria Sidhu, Komal
Reddy, Yoyo Mak, Manveen Dhillon, Queena
Zeng, Asia Chans and Boris Bilic. Thanks also to the 8
students who led an in-house camp at the school: Emma

gratitude goes to
the staff members who supervised the 3-day Cultus Lake
event: Ms. Easton, Ms. O'Neill, Mr. E. Ma, Ms. Acosta,
Ms. Lau, Ms. Shearer, Ms. Levin, Mr. Jarvis, Ms. Kwon,
Ms. Scarr, Cst. Carmichael and Mr. Allison. It was a very
successful event and the Stillwood Camp staff were very
impressed and complimentary of the respectful,
responsible and cooperative behaviour consistently
demonstrated by our students. Well done Camp Leaders
and Grade 8s! A great start for the SLSS Grads of 2019!

you use this site, you fill out your application once
and then apply to any BC institution you choose.

Students (or parents) can contact Ms. Kerr in the
Counselling Centre if they have questions or need
any help planning for life after high school.
GT -­‐ Graduation Transitions = 4 Credits Grade 12s must complete all requirements of the 4-­‐credit Graduation Transitions to graduate. Each student must complete and document 30-­‐hours of work or volunteer experience, 150-­‐minutes per week of physical activity in each of Grades 10-­‐12 and a Grad Transition Plan (with an updated resume). Halloween Events Successful: SLSS Press
Congratulations to the student groups who organized
several school-wide events in
October. Student Council hosted
a very successful first dance of the
year on October 30 from 6-9 pm.
The Halloween ‘Party in the
Pumpkin Patch” theme saw over 300 students in
attendance and many arrived in costumes and had a
great time dancing and hanging out with their
friends. Student leaders did an amazing job with
every aspect of the dance: booking the DJ,
advertising the event, selling tickets, scanning GoCards at the door, organizing a coat check, setting up
a photo booth, decorating and cleaning up the school,
arranging for first aid attendants and supervisors!
The International Issues Club raised funds by selling
“fair trade cocoa” Cadbury chocolates that allowed
students to send Halloween greetings to their friends.
The Accessible Education Association sold glow
sticks and raised money to support schools in
developing countries. During “spooky spirit week”
from October 27-31, students came to school dressed
up for various themed days. The week culminated
on October 31 when hundreds of students and staff
came to school dressed up in a variety of creative and
fun Halloween costumes. Student Council organized
a "costume contest" in the gym at lunch and the
bleachers were packed and everyone had a ton of
fun. More examples of the great Sharks school
spirit!
Stacks of the latest edition of our student newspaper
SLSS PRESS hit the student lounge areas in late
October. The 16-page edition featured interviews,
reporting, creative writing, editorials, opinion pieces,
movie and book reviews. Congratulations to editors:
Vivian Hu, Davy Lau and Annika Lim;
assistant editors Dorothy Poon and David
Huang; layout manager Matthew Cam; and
cover designer Lydia Jiao.

Flu Season?
Flu illness is caused by highly contagious
influenza viruses that can spread rapidly from
person to person. Viruses can live for up to 48
hours on the surfaces of toys, doorknobs,
computer keyboards, and other hard surfaces. It
can take up to a week for flu symptoms to
appear, and in that time you can infect others.
To reduce the risk of spreading the virus, it's a
good practice to cough or sneeze into your
sleeve (not your hands) and to wash your hands
often with hot water. In fact, frequent hand
washing with regular soap is the single most
effective way of controlling the spread of
infections. Staying home when you are sick with
flu symptoms and getting yourself vaccinated
also helps to protect those around you. If have
concerns, the best place to start is by calling
HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 to speak to a nurse any
time of the day or night. The nurse available at
8-1-1 can help you decide if you or your child
needs to see a doctor. Check out:
Connected and Online?
Teens live in a connected, digital
world
and
communication
happens instantly via many
online media platforms (Texting,
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,
Instagram, Snap Chat, Vine,
etc.). Our students are reminded
to always be thoughtful online,
as using a cell phone or sitting at
a keyboard feels like it is anonymous and private
when it is neither. Parents are encouraged to learn
more about social media and reinforce with their
teens that their “digital footprint” can be traced to
them, and stay with them forever. Demonstrate
thoughtful CARE and RESPECT, in person and
online today and every day! Always think before
you text or post!

RCMP Youth Academy
Grad 2015 Yearbook Write-Ups Due:
The annual Royal Canadian Mounted Police youth
academy is an excellent opportunity for young
people interested in a possible career in law
enforcement. The academy is for students 16-18
years of age and will run from April 1-9, 2015. The
participants will have experiences very similar to an
RCMP cadet, including demanding physical training
and classes on law, communication, role playing and
simulations. There are costs for the week long camp,
that includes all lodging and food.
Detailed
application packages are available in the SLSS
Counselling Centre from Ms. Kerr or Mr. Truelove
and must be fully completed and submitted to your
SLSS Counsellor soon.
A reminder to all Grads that their baby photos and
100-word write-ups for the yearbook are due in
DECEMBER. Be original, be classy and use formal
English (no text slang, OMG!). You can drop photos
off in room 203 and email your write-up. Put your
last name, first name and student number in the
subject line (Crosby, Sidney 123487) and email it to:

Dry After Grad 2015
Dry After Grad (DAG) has been an annual
tradition at Steveston-London for many years
and is 100% organized by parents. To help
sustain this wonderful tradition for 2015 and
beyond, please attend our next meeting on
December 10 at 7:00 pm in the library.

Sharks Champions!
Congratulations to our Senior Boys’ volleyball team
for
winning
their
second straight RSSAA
title and making it back
to the Lower Mainland
playoffs! Our Senior Boys’ team will try to defend
their LM title at SLSS as we host the Lower
Mainland AAA championships November 12-15.
Congratulations also to Cross-Country team
members Iris Janssen and Naomi Girard for
placing first and third in the Richmond Senior Girls’
championship race. Iris and Marcus Lau went to
Victoria to run in the Provincial Cross-Country
Championships in early November. Well done!

Parents (& students 18 or older) are reminded
that the important Richmond city council and
school board elections are happening now. Be
sure to participate responsibly in democracy by
learning about the candidates and casting your
vote on Saturday, November 15!
SLSS Music Students: Our talented band, choir and strings groups performed brilliantly at the school Remembrance Day
ceremonies on November 10 and students, staff and special guests were very impressed.
The music department will also perform at Maple Lane Elementary school on November 27
and plan to play at all six elementary schools in the Steveston-London catchment family
again this year! On December 5, the senior band, Grade 8 band and choir will perform at
the Aberdeen Mall at 12:30pm in the Fountain Atrium and all parents and family are
welcome! Please mark your calendars as on Thursday, December 11 we will host our annual Winter
Holiday Concert featuring all our groups at 7:00 pm in the school theatre - admission is by donation. We
will host an encore concert for SLSS students (and parents too) on December 12 in B block.
