today laid the foundation stone for construction of pucca houses in slum
pockets here with an investment of Rs 143 crore of
which 70 per cent will be
borne by the Centre.
About 2,685 houses
would be constructed under
the Rajiv Awas Yojana for
which the Centre would
provide 70 per cent, while 20
per cent would be borne by
the State government and
the rest by the beneficiaries,
official sources said.
The project was expected to be completed in the
next one- and-a-half years,
they said.
"The project is aimed at
making Berhampur a slumfree town," said the state's

He said the Chief
Minister had consented to
provide Rs 12 crore for

State govt to irrigate more than
10,000 hectares in five years
BERHAMPUR: In a bid to boost agriculture production, the State government
announced a plan to provide irrigation in
more than 10,000 hectares of land in the
next five years through various sources.
"We have already initiated the
process to expand irrigation network and
achieve the target of irrigating 10,000
hectares in five years. It will help in raising farm output in the state," Chief
Minister Naveen Patnaik said here after
inaugurating a three-day regional agriculture fair-2014.
The farmers from ten southern districts of the State attended the fair.
Since economic growth of the State
was largely dependant on agriculture,
the Chief Minister said his government
was giving much priority on the growth
and improvement of the farm and its
allied sectors.
While the government had made separate budget for the agriculture sector in
the last two years, it had also announced
ed a 20-bedded separate eye
ward in the city hospital
here, a new revenue inspection bungalow (IB), piped
water supply near revenue
IB and laid foundation stone
for piped water supply project at the tourist resort
Gopalpur-on-Sea.
The Chief Minister also
inaugurated 47 houses constructed under World Bank-
the agriculture policy, he said.
The policy was aimed at increasing
agriculture productivity, market facilities
to different agri-products and to take different welfare measures for farmers,
Patnaik said.
He also asked the farmers to take
advantages of Biju Krushak Kalyan
Yojana, an insurance policy for farmers in
the state.
Despite Cyclone Phailin, the state
government bagged Krishi Karman
Award from the Centre for the last two
consecutive years for best performing
state in overall food-grain production, he
said.
The Chief Minister said the proposed
State Potato Mission, aimed at making
the state self-sufficient in potato production, would start from 2015-16.
Several incentives for revival of the
multi-purpose cold storages and for cultivation of the potato would be provided
to the farmers, he added.
funded Odisha Disaster
Recovery Project (ODRP) at
Narayanpur near Gopalpur.
The government has
decided to construct pucca
houses with infrastructure
facilities in all villages located within five kms from the
sea coast under the World
Bank scheme after several
houses were damaged due
to Cyclone Phailin which hit
the state on October 12,
2013.
In Ganjam district, the
administration had identified as many as 16,981
pucca houses in 107 villages
under five coastal blocks.
Though the total outlay for
the project was yet to be
finalised, each house was
expected to cost around Rs
three lakh, said an officer.

KORAPUT, DEC 28
SEVERAL leakages in main
drinking water pipelines at
Jeypore in Koraput district
have triggered fear of outbreak of enteric diseases.
The public health engineering
organisation
(PHEO) supplies water
through its two main
pipelines after purifying it at
its Hatisala filtration centre,
sources said. With the main
PHEO pipelines are badly
damaged near Dhakhin Kali
Temple leading to a leakage,
people do use the running
water for bathing and washing clothes.
The pipelines are also
damaged on NH-26 near
Dhepaguda and near the
bridge of the bypass road to
Purunagada.
Koraput
District Collector Yamini
Sarangi said, "The department concerned has been
asked to repair the leakages
in the pipelines."
President of 'Sachetena
Nagarika
Committee',
Jeypore, Akshaya Sahu said,
"As the pipelines run close to
drains there is every possibility of drain water and
other waste materials mixing with drinking water. It
may cause outbreak of
water-borne diseases."

A
Memorandum
of
Understanding
(MOU)
was signed between SAIL,
Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP)
and Sulabh International
Social
Service
Organisation (SISSO) at
CEO’s Conference Hall on
December 26 for construction of toilets in schools
under
the
‘Swachha
Vidyalaya Abhiyan.’ GM
I/C (P&A) RSP PK
Pradhan and Deputy
Controller
of
SISSO
Mithilesh Jha signed the
MOU in the presence of
CEO of RSP GS Prasad.
ED(Projects) MK Das, ED
(Projects) SK Acharya, ED
(Works) Ashwini Kumar,
Director
in
charge
(M&HS)
AK
Singh,
GM(F&A) S Pradhan and
GM (T) Bijit Mohapatra
were also present on the
occasion.
Expressing happiness
over the signing of the
MOU, CEO said that this
is yet another significant
step by SAIL for achieving
the gigantic initiative
kicked off by the Prime
Minister of India. He laid
emphasis on sensitising
the beneficiaries regarding
the need for, and the
importance of, hygiene
and cleanliness.
It may be pertinent to
mention here that the
‘Swachha
Vidyalaya
Abhiyan’ is a part of the
‘Swachha Bharat Abhiyan’
started by the Prime
Minister Narendra Modi.
The programme has been
initiated under the SAIL
Corporate
Social
Responsibility projects
and under this the target
for RSP is the construction
of 355 toilets in 239
schools in peripheral villages in the Bisra and
Nuagaon Blocks and in
Rourkela
Municipal
Corporation area. SISSO
which is a specialist social
organization in the field
of public toilet facilities in
the country will execute
the project.
The total outlay for the
project is about Rs 9
crores. Under the project,
SISSO will construct the
toilets and impart sensitization to the villagers and
the
students
about
hygiene and cleanliness.
Each toilet block would
comprise an IWC and a
urinal with suitable water
supply. Separate toilets
will be constructed for
girls wherever needed. A
leach pit will be provided
for disposal of the waste.
His apprehension was
seconded by the Sub-divisional Medical Officer
(Jeypore) Dadhi Baman
Tripathy.
"With the supply of such
contaminated water continuing there is every possibility of outbreak of diseases
like typhoid, diarrhoea,
jaundice and fever. We have
informed the department
concerned about the matter."
Allaying fears, PHD officers of Jeypore said as water
flows in the pipelines at a
very high pressure, there is
little chance of it being contaminated by external
sources.
"The pipeline on the
NH is frequently damaged
due to plying of heavy
vehicles," said Assistant
Engineer
in
PHEO
(Jeypore) Chitta Ranjan
Nayak.

SAMBALPUR, DEC 28
ATHOUGH Burla is one of the important areas within the Sambalpur
Municipal Corporation and even of
Western Odisha authorities are least
concerned about the bus terminus.
The bus terminus here does not have
the basic facilities for the passengers
dependent on it.
The terminus here does have a rest
shed for shelter and even public toilet
for the passengers. An open space in
the market area with concrete floor is
all that is called the Bus stand.
The area now within Sambalpur
Municipal Corporation is home to the
Veer Surendra Sai Medical College
and Hospital, Veer Surendra Sai
University of Technology and (Jyoti
Vihar)
Sambalpur
University.
Thousands of people around the state
and even from neighbouring states
who visit this town facing lot of problems due to lack of basic facilities in
the bus terminus, informed sources.
“The Veer Surendra Sai Medical
College and Hospital, the only biggest
health care centre of this region,
makes Burla an important place.
Thousands of people regularly come
to this place because of the hospital.
Besides the hired vehicles, buses are
the only communication to reach this
place. Still now, the civic authority
here has failed to provide the basic
amenities like a toilet in the bus
stand,” said a local resident, Tara
Chand Bag.
Around fifteen buses originate
from this bus terminus for far off place
like Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and
Rourkela and more than fifty buses
pass through Burla. “We have
requested the civic authority to initiate
measures to build a rest shed and toilet inside the terminus several times.
Still now, the authorities haven't
responded to our demands,” said
President of Burla Private Bus Owners
Association, Pawan Saha.
In absence of basic amenities, the
commuters especially the patients discharged from the hospital are facing a
lot of problems. The commuters do
not find a comfortable place to wait
for the bus and are often seen standing
in front of shops or loitering in the bus
stand.
Social activist Sripati Sandha said,
“This is the responsibility of the civic
body to provide basic amenities to the
passengers in the bus terminus.
However, the civic body has preferred
to close its eyes to these problems.
Now the newly formed Corporation
and the State government jointly
should take initiative in this matter.”
According to sources the notified
area council had a proposal to build a
public toilet in the terminus however
there are no proposals for constructing the rest shed as of now.
