MISSION STATEMENT OF ST. EULALIA’S PARISH
The Parish Community of St. Eulalia makes present the Lord Jesus Christ in the celebration of the
Eucharist, the meeting of parishioners for various prayer opportunities, and outreach to the marginalized. We
share in the works of the local Ministerium through common prayers.
We are resolved to grow the faith of the Church with our children through religious education and with
all others through the RCIA. We challenge ourselves to develop service projects for youth and young adults,
and to become more welcoming to all.
With continued growth in our area, Evangelization occurs through various outlets including pastoral
outreach, sacramental preparation, and the promotion of an intimate respect for all life.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
WATCHING FOR THE MESSIAH
Today’s Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing
and following Jesus sounds so simple and casual, it’s easy
to miss the significant acts of faith that are made.
John points to Jesus: “Look,” he says, “there is the
Lamb of God.” John’s faith in Jesus is evident, so evident
that John’s disciples immediately leave his side to follow
this Jesus.
The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend time with him, and are quick to spread
the good news of their discovery: “We have found the
Messiah.”
It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations,
the hopes of many ages of faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the
Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come.
Nearly everyone among the Jewish people was watching
for the Messiah back then; who in our own society
watches for signs of the presence of the Messiah today?

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit
within you.
— 1 Corinthians 6:19a
January 18, 2015; Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
1 Sm 3: 3B-10, 19; Ps 40: 2,4,7-10;1 Cor 6: 13C-15A, 17-20; Jn 1: 35-42
A popular hymn used in many Catholic churches is Here I am Lord. That hymn is based in part on our first reading from
the Book of Samuel. The Lord wants us to respond just the way Samuel does in the reading. God calls each of us to
discipleship through lives of stewardship.
Just as Samuel was confused, we, too, may fail to understand what God is calling us to at times. Nevertheless, just like
Samuel we do need to respond “Here I am Lord.” That is not always easy and it can be uncomfortable at times. Eli instructs Samuel to respond “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” Samuel does so and “the Lord was with him.”
Our challenge is first to hear God’s call. It is there always, but we must listen for it. Then we need to respond to that
call, and we need to respond as Samuel did, “Here I am Lord. I come to do your will.”
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not
a result of works, so that no one may boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9
3RD CORNERSTONE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
WHO IS SAINT EULALIA CHURCH?
God has shown us tremendous grace. Which is why we planted a church here in ELMHURST - to share God’s love and His message of redemption through Christ. We are rooted in that grace - that underserved generosity - and from there, we move out as a
community on mission, working to grow God’s kingdom and bring glory to His name. Our core values, Word, Worship, Community and Service are informed by those of the first “Christian church, as described in Acts 2:42 and 46. St. Eulalia Church can be
described in the following statement: “Walking in His Footsteps.”
TELL US YOUR STORY
We love hearing about how God has worked and is working in the lives of His people. Tell us how you’ve been impacted by the
Gospel and shown God’s grace: We look to have you gather with us these next several weeks to share our stories of why we are
members here, because here at Saint Eulalia Church, we believe that all who follow Christ are called to a mission of grace. In order
to fulfill that mission, we must be a generous people, a sent people, and a rooted people, and that’s what this campaign is all about.
A GENEROUS PEOPLE
It is our desire that the people of Saint Eulalia’s be the most generous and joyful people in our area - we want to see our North Pocono Community and our neighbors prosper through our efforts. We want generosity because we have experienced life-changing
grace through Jesus Christ. Jesus was overwhelmingly generous with us; He gave up His glory, His authority, and His life so that
we who are sinners and had no hope could be richly blessed with eternal joy and life. Once we experience Christ’s generosity toward us, we are compelled to generous and sacrificial giving. We give of our time, money, possessions, and ultimately, we offer our
neighbors the same hope in Christ that we have been given.
A ROOTED PEOPLE
While the vision for Saint Eulalia’s is to equip and send God’s people to engage their communities with the gospel, the church must
also be rooted in our own community. Saint Eulalia’s has the opportunity to meet our parish needs and prepare for our future growth
with an adequate facility to be used as a tool for mission. It will be a place where our congregation can be changed by the gospel and
equipped to live in ways that glorify and proclaim Christ, where our children and young people can be trained and supported, and
where we host events that will support the prosperity of our parish community and meet the needs of our neighbors.
A SENT PEOPLE
We believe that taking our faith values, nourished by the sacred scriptures and Holy Eucharist, is one of the most effective ways to
spread the Gospel of Christ. Church mission is in our DNA. Our community knows of our strong commitment to charitable service.
Our neighbors know of our committed beliefs. And we go forth each day sharing that Good News that Jesus loves us and them too!
Where will the money go? Please consider joining your fellow Parishioners in supporting our efforts
by contributing what you can to any of the following opportunities.
$700,000 Facilities Expansion with memorial opportunities
$400,000 for Religious Education Complex
$300,000 replacing the Chapel

“Ecumenical Celebration of God’s Word on Friday, January 23, at 12:10 p.m. in the Cathedral of
Saint Peter, Scranton.”
The theme for the 2015 Week of Prayer for Christian
Unity is “Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink.” (John 4:142). The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan
woman invites us to try water from a different well and
also to offer a little of our own. In diversity, we enrich
each other.
When Jesus says to her, “please give me a drink” it implies an ethical action that recognizes the need for one
another in living out the Church’s mission. It compels us
to change our attitude, to commit ourselves to seek unity
in the midst of our diversity, through our openness to a
variety of forms of prayer and Christian spirituality.
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a privileged
moment for prayer, encounter and dialogue. It is an opportunity to recognize the richness and value that are present in the other, the different, and to ask God for the gift
of unity.
For more information and resources for the 2015 Week of
Prayer for Christian Unity, visit the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute at: www.geii.org.
The Diocese of Scranton will host an Ecumenical Celebration of God’s Word on Friday, January 23, at 12:10
p.m. in the Cathedral of Saint Peter, Scranton. There will
be no 12:10 P.M. Mass that day in the Cathedral. All are
welcome to attend. In addition, CTV: Catholic Television will broadcast the service live.”
This observance, first organized by Father Paul Watson,
S.A., in 1908 at Graymoor in Garrison, NY., seeks to
gather together diverse communities of the Christian faith
to express the degree of communion which the churches
have already received, and to pray together for the full
visible unity of the one Church of Jesus Christ.
All of the people of the Diocese of Scranton are encouraged to attend a local Ecumenical prayer service in your
area and all are invited to participate in the prayer service
at Saint Peter’s Cathedral.
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
