YSR (KADAPA) DISTRICT - HIGHLIGHTS:

YSR District (also referred to as Kadapa District) is said to be the heart of Rayalseema region and is located in South-central part of Andhra Pradesh. Y.S.R. District is surrounded by Kurnool District on the North, Chittoor on the South, Nellore on the East and Anantapur on the West between the 13 o 43’and 15 o 10’ Northern Latitudes and 77 o 55’and 79 o 29’ of the Eastern Longitudes. YSR district has prospects for emerging as an industrial hub of Rayalaseema region. Vast reserves of

Limestone

(Cement grade) in Yerraguntla, Mylavaram, Jammalamadugu Mandals, world’s single largest and best deposits of

Barytes

in Mangampet area in addition to the

Fly ash

which is a by-product from the RTPP, Muddanur have ushered in establishment of Five major

Cement Plants

, 170

Mineral Pulverising units

and 250

Fly ash brick units

respectively and offering good scope for establishment of new industries. Besides, many other minerals such as Napa (Kadapa) slabs, Steatite, Quartz, White Clay, Yellow Ochre, Asbestos and Serpentine are also available in the district. The command area of K-C (Kurnool-Cuddapah) canal is more than one lakh acres and it makes the district as agriculture surplus for Paddy, Ground Nut, Sunflower, Bengal Gram, Turmeric, Chillies and Onions and also for horticulture crops such as Mango, Banana, Papaya, Orange, Lemon etc., There is a good scope for

food processing units

based on agricultural and horticultural crops. YSR district is renowned for its

temple tourism

as well as

rural tourism

. The old records of the district reveal that Cuddapah (Kadapa) was previously called as “Gadapa “ in Telugu language, which means ‘Threshold’ and is considered as a Gateway to Tirumala. The ancient village of Cuddapah (Kadapa) with its large tank and temple of Lord Venkateswara at Devuni Kadapa was a convenient camping place for the piligrims travelling to the holy shrine of Tirumala. The lush greenery of the Eastern Ghats can soothe a tired soul. These Ghats give the district a very diverse topography, right from low plains to high plateaus. This district is home to Saint-Poet Annamacharya, Socio-religious reformer and foreteller Pothuluri Veera Brahmam and Poet Vemana.

3 Gandikota Gorge and Fort, Pushpagiri Temples, ancient Kodanda Rama Swamy temple at Vontimitta, Sidhout Fort, Bramhamgari Matham, Ameen Peer Dargah and Gandi Kshetram are some of the most important tourist places in the district which is noted for religious harmony.

b) Forest Resources:

YSR district has a forest area of

5,050 km²

, which is

32.87 %

of the district area. Seshachalam forest and hills, Velikonda forest, Palakonda forest, Nallamala forest, Lankamala forest and Yerramala forest are the major forests in the district. There are two

wild life sanctuaries

, Sri Venkateswara National Park and Sri Lankamalleswara Sanctuary in this District.

Red Sanders (Pterocarpus Santalinus - Fabaceae)

, an endemic and endangered tree species of medicinal value is available in plenty in this area. This is the only area in India where Red Sanders, often referred to as 'Rakta-chandanam' or 'Yerra-chandanam' or Red Sandalwood is available. Apart from Red Sanders, Raintree, Peltophorum, Neem, Ficus species, Kanuga, Dirisinam, Cassia Siamea, Spathodia, Teak, Hardwikia, Neeruddi, Rela, Holoptilia, Alstonia are the other major species available in forests of the district.

b) Mineral resources:

Y.S.R. district is a repository of mineral wealth. The important minerals that are available in the district are Barytes, Lime stone, Clay, Quartz, Dolomite etc., Kadapa is also famous for its stone called as “

Kadapa stone

” used in building construction and for slabs especially in the south India. Deposits of a rare hard mineral named

Fullerene

have been found in the barytes mines at Mangampet in Obulavanipalli mandal of Y.S.R. district district in Andhra Pradesh. Fullerene is a form of carbon with large spheroid molecules, consisting of hollow cage of 60 or more atoms. The mineral, which is said to be 250 times tougher and 10 times lighter than steel, is used in aerospace, nano technology, solar power and it is available nowhere in the world except in Russia. Fullerene is costlier than gold and commands a price of US $ 23,000-45,000 for 10 grams. AP Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) had contacted Geological Survey of India (GSI), National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and many universities to undertake a study of Fullerene deposits in Mangampet.
