PREFACE International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) is a prime mover in ophthalmic education globally. In its new strategic plan 2010-­‐2011, it assigned high priority to developing teams of eye care professionals led by well trained ophthalmologists, and to strengthen and sup-­‐port systems to improve ophthalmic education. The Southasian Academy of Ophthalmology (SAO), also referred to as the SAARC Academy of Ophthalmology, is determined to enhance the standard of ophthalmic postgraduate education and collaborate with other partners to improve the quality of ophthalmic care in the region. Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF), a leading non -­‐ governmental international organization is working in eye care in Australia, the Pacific, South Asia, South-­‐East Asia and Africa. Sub-­‐specialty development is one of the priorities of the organization. As part of a collaborative effort, these three organizations are keen to determine the need and future projections of key eye health professionals in the SAARC countries, and to assess institutional capacity for ophthalmic education in the region. It was proposed to undertake a consultative process involving the collection of information on ophthalmic education and eye health work force needs in regional countries, analysis of data, consultation with a range of stakeholders to ascertain potential opportunities and current bottlenecks, and accordingly prepare a capacity assessment report of the regional countries. This report provides a summary of the various training centres that participated in an online survey. The list of centres presented in this report is by no means complete. A few centers were not able to feedback in time for the survey. The names of these centres have been included but the data fields in the respective tables are empty. This directory of training centres is envisaged as a dynamic document that can be updated periodically. A more comprehensive report on ophthalmic education in SAARC countries has been prepared separately. The data included in this report is derived from the online submissions and has been accepted in good faith. In some instances, fields were left empty and these have been presented as such. In a few others, for instance, the field of subspecialty training was filled while that of subspecialty services was left blank. Since the organization/institution was providing subspecialty training, it was therefore interpreted that the same center also provided subspecialty services. Any inadvertent omission or commission is duly regretted. 6 1
