is synonymous with communication gadgets such as Computers and
Ipad. These gadgets he stressed are capable of bringing an end to
the culture of book writing and reading, adding that the end point
should be on how to find a way of collaborating between book
writing and use of internet knowledge.
Prof. Soyinka, an erudite
poet, a scholar of great
repute
and
an
internationally
acknowledged novelist who
was the Guest Lecturer at
the event spoke on the
issue of insecurity in the
country, describing the ongoing Boko Haram Violence
Crusade as a threat that
must not be handled with
kid gloves. He dwelt on the
idea of a set of people who
see
knowledge
as
anathema, who describe
knowledge as forbidden.
The Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief
Willie Obiano represented by the Commissioner of Education
charged Nigerian students to contribute their quota in the growth of
education. She expressed appreciation to the Guest Lecturer, and
the benefactor for their contributions.
The Chairman of the event, Chief Dr. Anyaoku in his speech
charged Nigerians to acknowledge the seriousness of the Nigerian
insecurity situation, he stressed that the fight is not for government
alone and called on all to join hands with the government of the
day to support the situation. The benefactor of the Zik Lecture
Series and Special Adviser to the President, on Inter Party Affairs,
Senator Ben Ndi Obi said the event is meant to immortalize
Nigeria’s first president, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe after whom the
University is named, for his contribution to humanity, the country
and Africa.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku in his speech described
the Guest Lecturer and Nobel Laureate as the grand commander of
intelligentsia, internationally renowned playwright, poet and social
activist for his role in Nigerian political history, the struggle for
independence, the electoral imbroglio in Western Nigeria in 1965.
He commended the chairman of the event for his contributions to
diplomacy and international relations. He also expressed gratitude
to the sponsor of the event, Senator Ndi Obi for his financial
contribution to the event.
The Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Rev. Fr. Prof. Jude Obinna

Eyes are very important parts of the
body. Like any other part of the
body, eyes are silently and
constantly at work throughout the
day, be it working in front of the
computer screen, studying, reading
or simply watching television or
doing any other activity, it is our
eyes that bear the brunt and at the
end of the day we feel that our
eyes are tired. Proper eye care is
very much recommended for
keeping eyes healthy and stress
free and relieving them of
tiredness.
Though
there
are
numerous benefits of eye exercises
for the health and fitness of your
eyes, but it would be futile if you
think they would lower your
spectacle number, cure glaucoma
or cataract or any other organic
disability in the eye. Eye exercises
can also not cure high degrees of

squint for which surgery is only
recourse.
Our vision is one of those wonderful
gifts most of us take for granted.
The only time we even have cause
to think about our vision as such is
when we think about a blind person
who has no vision at all, or our own
vision begins to fail. Being aware of
the importance of protecting your
vision can help you to avoid
problems with it in the future. Your
eyes are parts of the body like the
skin, you can do things to slow the
aging process by using certain
precautions that take little time to
implement and can make a world of
difference later in life. What will eye
care do for you?
Eye Care
Eye Care is an important factor in
all of our lives. We sometimes take
sight for granted but can you
imagine not being able to see
everyday things normally. Imagine
not being able to see your kids,
watch TV, take a walk and see all of
nature’s beauty. People with certain
eye diseases are not able to enjoy
these experiences to their full
extent and sometimes not at all.
There are several reasons for
people to start learning more about
eye health and how to protect their
sight. Eye care is essential to
maintaining the health of our eyes.
They are physically hampered by
impaired vision. They are not able
to perform daily activities like
driving or working. Some are barely
able to see or have lost their vision
entirely. They are also faced with
emotional stress. People with
dramatic eye problems face many
issues that can lead to solitude and
depression. This strain also affects
friends and families.
There are many eye diseases that
can
be
prevented
or
their
progression slowed down with
proper precautions and healthy
eating. Eating a lot of Vitamins A, E,
C, some Zinc and Selenium can
help
prevent
many
diseases
including those that affect the eyes.
Visit the nutrition page on what
foods contain these vitamins and
minerals. Certain diseases might be
caused by other factors such as
obesity, diabetes, exposure to
ultraviolet light, smoking, certain
medications such as steroids, and
many other factors. It is a good
idea to ask your eye care doctor for
specific steps you can take. People
with obesity or who are diabetic
should have more routine checkups
since they are more likely to
develop certain eye diseases.
Those who are outside most of the
day
should
use
protective
sunglasses or eyeglasses to prevent
heavy exposure to ultraviolet light.
People who smoke or take certain
medications should ask their doctor
if they are more likely to have eye
diseases
because
of
family
background. These little measures
can help your eyes stay healthy and
keep all the emotional, physical,
and financial problems that come
with eye problems away.
Eye exercises help improve the
mechanical stability of the eye
in following ways
a) Allowing
eye
movement,
especially in people who have
their eyes fixed at a particular
position for long periods, or
people who wear spectacles, by
relieving
congestion
and
permitting a more comfortable
vision.
b) Exercising a particular group of
muscles can cure or radically
improve a lower degree squint.
Even if squint is surgically
operated, exercises can build

up the capacity of the eye to

Exercising a weak muscle can

Eye
exercises
reduce
an

if
done
correctly,
thus
reducing
tiredness, strain of the eyes
and headaches.
Eye exercises also improve the
power of the eye to maintain
convergence

depressed
position, and therefore permit
long comfortable application to
near work.
Another good eye relaxing
technique is to look far and
then at a point close to you
rapidly a few times.
Avoid reading while sleeping
and maintain a distance of
about one to one and a half
feet between the eyes and your
book.
Relax your eyes with warm
compresses by dipping a napkin
in luke warm water, squeeze
the water and place the napkin
over your eyes.
Use of a moisturizing or
lubricating eye drop also
relieves tired eyes.
Rub your fingers for about
fifteen to twenty times until
they feel warm. Close your eyes
and cup them with warm
hands. Let your fingers overlap
and rest on the centre of your
forehead for about a minute.
Stand at one end of the room
and let your eyes scan around
the edges of objects in the
room such as doors, clock,
television etc. This makes your
eyes move in a loose and fluid
way. Do this for about two
minutes.
