Transcript HBS 3.4.3 day 2 Nephron

The water, waste products, salt, glucose,
and other chemicals that have been
filtered out of the blood at the
glomerulus (gloh-mer-yuh-luhs) are
known collectively as glomerular filtrate.
 The glomerular filtrate consists primarily of
water, excess salts (primarily Na+ and K+),
glucose, and urea.

The volume of blood passing through
both kidneys in one minute
 The amount of glomerular filtrate that is
produced by both kidneys in one minute
 the volume of urine that is produced by
both kidneys in one minute
 the volume of urine produced by an
average adult in one day

Imagine how the 3-D structure of the nephron
would appear. For example, the Bowman’s
capsule is a cup-like chamber containing the
glomerulus. The filtrate that occurs due to high
pressure in the glomerulus empties into the
Bowman’s capsule and drains into the proxima
convoluted tubule.
11:27, 12:30
Use markers or colored pencils to
color all vessels containing blood red
and all the tubules that would
contain filtrate or urine yellow.
 Using an orange marker, label the
following components of the
nephron:

o Use a black marker to draw arrows that
show the general direction of filtrate and
material movement in and out of the
nephron’s structural components.
o Research the points in the nephron’s
structure where the three key processes of
filtration, reabsorption and secretion
occur. Think about how these three
processes relate to the composition of
blood and to urine.
