THE CHURCH IS THE
SACRAMENT OF SALVATION
AND COMMUNION
Questions to Think About
• What does it mean that Church is a Sacrament of
Salvation?
• What does it mean that the Church is a mystery?
What does it mean that Church is a
Sacrament of Salvation?
The Church is the Sacrament of Salvation because she is
both a sign and instrument of God’s salvation for humanity,
which means that God’s grace is conveyed to the faithful.
Even though the Church has sinful members, it is still
considered holy, because she is the Mystical Body of
Christ.
What does it mean that the Church is a
mystery?
The Church is a mystery since it is:
• Human and divine
• Visible and invisible
• Horizontal and vertical.
Neither our senses nor our reason can fully unveil the
reality of the Church.
Dimensions of the Church
• Human and Divine
• Invisible dimension is the intimate communion with the
Holy Trinity and other humans.
• Visible dimension is communion in the teachings of the
Apostles, in the sacraments, and in the hierarchical order.
Question to Think About
• What does it mean to say that the Church is a Sacrament
of Communion?
What does it mean to say that the Church
is a Sacrament of Communion?
• The Church is a Sacrament of Communion because she
is God’s instrument to bring men into communion with
God, with each other, and through the grace of the
Sacraments.

Eucharist as Communion
• The Eucharist unites each member of the Church with
God himself.
• According to the Hebrew way of thinking, blood stands for
life. If one participates in the blood of Christ, they will
participate in the life of Christ.

AUTHORITY IN THE CHURCH:
THE HIERARCHY AND THE
PAPACY
Question to Think About
• What is the hierarchical structure of the Church?
• Who remains forever as the chief priest and shepherd of
souls?
• What is the Papacy?
What is the hierarchical structure of the
Church?
• Christ endowed the Church with a hierarchical structure in
which those in authority-the Pope, the Bishops, Priests,
and Deacons in communion with him-serve the members
by teaching, ruling, and sanctifying them.
The hierarchy of the Church was established to pass down
the Apostles’ authority, and traditions so that the Church
would continue ton the course Jesus Christ had set for it.
Who remains forever the chief priest and
shepherd of souls?
• Even though Christ made Saint Peter (and his
successors) the chief Pastor of the Church on earth,
Christ is still the head of the Church.
• Video: The Rock of Saint Peter
• Infallibility is a guarantee of Christ that St. Peter and his
successors would be free from error in their public
teachings on matter of faith and morals.
What is the papacy?
• Why do we have a Pope?
• The Pope is the apostolic successor of Saint Peter’s
authority to rule the Church, possessing the gift of
infallibility.
• The successors of the Apostles:
1. Preach the Gospel faithfully
2. Rule the Church through service
3. Sanctify the Church through the Sacraments

WHAT IS THE ROMAN
CURIA?
Question to Think About
• What is the Roman Curia?
• Who are the different members and what jobs do they do?
What is the Roman Curia?
• The Roman Curia currently consists of
• The Secretariat of State
• Nine Congregations
• Three Tribunals
• Twelve Pontifical Counsels.
• The Roman Curia assists the Roman Pontiff in governing
the Church throughout the world.
Secretariat of State
• The Secretariat oversees the Political and Diplomatic
functions of the Catholic Church.
• The role of the Secretariat of State section for General
affairs handle the everyday administration duties.
• The role of the Secretariat of State section for relations
with the states handles the Vatican’s diplomatic relations
with civil governments.
Tribunal
• Tribunal means court.
• There are three major tribunals:
1. Apostolic Penitentiary-grants absolutions and
dispensations in matters related to the Holy See. It also
has the authority over the granting and proper use of
indulgences.
2. Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura-ensures
that justice in the Church is correctly administered.
3. Tribunal of the Roman Rota-is an appellate court
charged with safeguarding rights within the Church and
with providing assistance to lower tribunals.
AUTHORITY IN THE CHURCH:
BISHOPS, PRIESTS AND
DEACONS
Question to Think About
• What is the episcopacy?
What is the episcopacy?
• Episcopacy is the priesthood of the diaconate.
• Bishops are successors of the Apostles who exercise the
fullness of the priesthood of Christ.
• Bishops serve the people of God in their dioceses and
remain in fellowship with their brother bishops, concerned
with the universal needs of the Church.
• Bishops can celebrate Holy Orders in which they ordain a
baptized man to the episcopacy, the priesthood of the
diaconate.

Question to Think About
• What is an Ecumenical Council?
What is an Ecumenical Council?
• An Ecumenical Council is a meeting of the bishops of the
world under the authority of the Pope.
• The first Ecumenical Councils was the First Council of
Nicaea in 325 AD.
• The Council of Jerusalem was a prototype for the other
councils.
• The first six Ecumenical Councils addressed the question
“Who is Jesus Christ?” in response to the various
heresies.
Questions to Think About
• What is the Priesthood? What does he do?
• What is the Diaconate? What does he do? What can’t he
do?
What is the Priesthood?
• A priest assists the diocesan bishop in the office of the
priesthood of Christ, usually taking care of the people of a
parish.
• The name for the office of the priest is presbyterate.
• Video: What does the priest do?
• Video: Why become a priest?
What is the diaconate?
• Deacons are ordained to provide a ministry of service.
• Two types of deacons:
1. Men preparing for ordination into the priesthood are
ordained transitional deacons before they are ordained.
2. Other men, even if they are married, can be called to
serve as permanent deacons.
• Some examples of service that deacons do are distribute
communion, preach, bless marriages, and living a life of
charity.
THE CHURCH
AS TEACHER
Questions to Think About?
• What is the Magisterium?
• What is the Deposit of Faith?
• Can the Church change its doctrine over time?
• What is infallibility?
What is the Magisterium?
• The Magisterium is the ordinary and universal teaching
authority of the Pope and the bishops in communion with
him.
• The Magisterium guides the members of the Church,
without error, in matters of faith and morals, through the
interpretation of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.
• The Magisterium defends, guards, and interprets the
received Deposit of Faith.
What is the Deposit of Faith?
• The Deposit of Faith is the definitive Revelation of Christ,
given to the Apostles, and through them, to the Church as
Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.
• It is the heritage of faith handed on in the Church from the
time of the Apostles.
• The Magisterium draws all that it proposes for belief as
being divinely revealed.
• Video: The Magisterium and the Deposit of Faith
Does the Church change its doctrine over
time?
• While Divine Revelation is closed, the Church grows in
her understanding of the Deposit of Faith over the
centuries.
• Video: To whom the deposit of faith is entrusted
What is infallibility?
• Infallibility is the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church,
whereby the Magisterium can definitively proclaim a
doctrine in faith or morals without error.
THE CHURCH AS
SANCTIFIER
Questions to Think About
• How does the Church sanctify its members?
• Is there salvation outside the Church?
• Why does the Church evangelize non-Catholics?
How does the Church Sanctify its
Members?
• The Church has the mission through the Sacraments and
her moral teaching.
Is there salvation outside the Church?
• Properly understood, all salvation comes from Christ, the
Head through the Church, which is his Body.
• Outside the Church, there is no salvation,
• Christ may, however, save men outside the visible bounds
of the Church through his grace.
Why does the Church evangelize nonCatholics?
• Obedient to her mission, the Church strives to evangelize
the entire world, seeing whatever goodness and truth
people already possess as a preparation for the Gospel.
• A person who knowing that the Catholic Church was
made necessary by Christ, but who refuses to enter or
remain to it, will not be able to be saved because the
person would be refusing salvation on the basis on which
God wants to give it.
• Non-Catholic Christians would not be automatically
excluded because they are united in an imperfect world
by the Sacrament of Baptism. Only God can judge
conscience.
