Notre Dame is a Cathedral
Gothic style
 Reflects Paris’s status as the capital of the Kingdom
France
 Is the seat of the Archbishop of Paris

WHO CREATED IT?

Bishop Maurice de Sully started the construction
in 1163


French Revolution


Completed in 1272 (some say 1345), partly because
design was enlarged during construction
Many of the cathedral’s sculptures were removed or
demolished
Notre Dame was restored during the late 19th
century

Being a cathedral, it is
used for masses

tours in multiple
languages
Has been owned by the
