POSITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS RF LF CF LB CB RB

IS IT IMPORTANT ?

• Purpose – Keep teams from gaining a tactical advantage • Other considerations – Administration of the match

THE MOST COMMON WAYS • MEMORIZING THE SERVICE ORDER – 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 – Then 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 1 and so on… – Rarely Happens!!!

– How about…. 77 , 15 , 61 , 34 , 52 , 9 • CAN USE PLAYER CHARACTERISTICS – Hair: Color, Short, None, Pony Tail, Pig Tails – Wraps, braces, bright / different shoes…

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY • RECOGNIZE PLAYER POSITIONS • UNDERSTAND POSITIONAL ROLES • WHY THEY DO WHAT THEY DO • HOW THEY END UP OUT OF ALIGNMENT

A TEAM IS COMPOSED OF… • RULES DEFINE ROLES OF TWO PLAYERS – Libero – Team Captain – Can be the Same Player.

• REMAING PLAYERS DEFINED ONLY BY SERVICE ORDER

A TEAM IS COMPOSED OF… • SETTER • OUTSIDE HITTER • MIDDLE BLOCKER • RIGHT SIDE (OPPOSITE / SECOND SETTER OR HITTER) • DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST • SERVING SPECIALIST • LIBERO

SO WHAT’S IN A NAME??

IDENTIFYING THE OFFENSE • SYSTEM USED TO DIRECT THE BALL TOWARDS OPPONENT’S COURT • OFFENSE USUALLY DEFINED BY TWO NUMBERS – First identifies total number of hitters in the offense – Second identifies number of setters in the offense

IDENTIFYING THE OFFENSE • EXAMPLES INCLUDE • 6 – 0 Everyone hits; everyone sets (from MF) • 6 – 2 Everyone hits; 2 designated back-row setters who hit when in front row • 4 – 2 Four Hitters; 2 designated front-row setters (from MF) • 5 – 1 Five Hitters; 1 designated setter (all the way around) • Int’l 4 – 2 Front row setters are at the RF • Modified 5 – 1 Substitution of setters FR / BR

OFFENSIVE “FORMATIONS” • SYSTEM TO RECEIVE SERVE AND PUT BALL INTO PLAY • USUALLY BASED ON ABILITY OF THE PLAYERS • EXAMPLES INCLUDE: – The “W” or five person receive – The “Cup” or “Stagger” four person receive – The “Line” or three person serve receive

LF “CUP” EXAMPLE CF RF RB LB CB

OFFENSIVE “PATTERNS” • WITH THE STYLE OF OFFENSE • 6 – 0, 4 – 2, 6 – 2, 5 – 1 ….

• AND THE OFFENSIVE FORMATION • “W” , “CUP” , “STAGGER” , “LINE” • RECOGNIZE POSITIONAL PLAYERS IN THE ROTATION • WHERE THEY NEED TO BE TO FILL THEIR ROLE

CONSIDERATIONS • SETTER – Not receiving serve – Penetrating into “Setting Zone” as much as possible – Uses second contact to deliver ball to attacker – Second setter can be a passer, but not preferred option • OUTSIDE HITTER – Both OHs usually receive serve – Position the front row OH close to attack zone

MORE CONSIDERATIONS • LIBERO – Almost always next best option as a passer – “ Contrasting ” jersey makes them easy to follow • DS – Another good passing option – Usually into back row for OHs having a bad day • MIDDLE BLOCKERS – Not so much; usually minimize their ball handling

BUILDING THE ROTATION • START WITH THE SETTER – Already know that opposite player will be “Second Setter” (“Opposite” or “RS”) • IDENTIFY PLAYERS ON EITHER SIDE OF SETTER – OH on one side of Setter • Other OH will be opposite • Maybe a DS in the Back Row – MB on other side of Setter • Other MB will be opposite • Libero replacement in Back Row

DIRECTING YOUR FOCUS • WHERE ARE THE POSITIONAL PLAYERS IN THE ROTATION??

• WHO NEEDS TO BE SOMEWHERE AND WHY??

• WHAT DO THEY HAVE TO DO TO GET THERE??

• WHO IS AROUND TO AFFECT THEIR MOVEMENTS??

THINGS THAT WILL HELP • R1 AND R2 “INVENTORY” ROTATIONS PRIOR TO BECKON – Setter; front row or back??

– Who is around the setter; their opposites??

– Libero in??

– Any FR / BR Subs??

• LOOK FOR OTHER CUES – The two teams will give you information • “Setter’s Dead or Down”; 3 hitters – 7, 13 and 24 • “Setter’s Up or Live”; 2 hitters…

THINGS THAT WILL HELP • CREATE A MENTAL PICTURE OF THE CURRENT ROTATION – Visualize moving the players around • FIND TIME TO DRAW THEM OUT – Different people learn differently – Drawing the picture is better than looking at the picture • LINE UP CARDS – Great aid for new officials and the unsure
