Uganda- UK Health Alliance Zambia UK: A transferable model • • • • Lord Crisp + Zambian government Coordinate UK-based volunteer projects Workforce not service development Main issues: – Higher specialist training – Nurse education • Successful and growing Uganda-UK HA: Purpose (1) • Support Ugandan Government – Develop workforce – Improve health systems – Achieve MDGs – Manage diversity in Volunteer “offer” • Provide opportunities for Learning, Development and research – Health workers – Health institutions – Health-related HEIs Uganda-UK HA: Purpose (2) • Promote coordination between – Uganda and UK – UK Governmental and non-Governmental organisations • Promote internationally-recognised standards – Of health care delivery – Of international development • Assure value for money – – – – Efficacy Efficiency Economy Effectiveness Uganda-UK HA members will: • Agree to share information, experience and expertise through – – – – Websites/Internet etc. Conferences/ meeting attendance Face to face discussion (Uganda and elsewhere) Etc • Work together wherever possible to maximise: – Health benefits to the Ugandan people – Value for money – Improved outcomes Uganda-UK HA: encouraging best practice Activities must: • Be consistent with aims, plans and priorities of Ugandan MoH and/or Regional/ Local Health Authorities • Led by Ugandans including agreement on introducing and evaluating new/ innovative practice • Focus on developing expertise and strengthening systems • Have a clear and robust exit strategy Uganda-UK HA: encouraging best practice • Development of people mapped to greatest need in poorest communities • Quality assured - all clinical/ educational participants formally registered by relevant UK and Ugandan professional bodies • All activities robustly evaluated Uganda-UK HA: Potential Benefits • A FOCAL POINT to ensure Ugandan requests for support/ development are understood by potential partners • Promote specific PROJECTS requested by the Ugandan Government • Ensure better COORDINATION OF EXISTING links and partnerships Work to common not competing standards • Recognition of DIVERSITY of international support • Improve “Efficiency” and Sustainability of Volunteering Progress to Date • Database of over 150 bodies • UK Launch 12 Jan 2013 • Draft MoU Today Next steps?
