Residents and attendings are not to evaluate the academic performance of any student for whom they have provided health care, including psychological and reproductive health care. 2. If a medical student is hospitalized at UNCH, other medical students should not be involved in the hospitalized student’s care. 3. Medical students seen in the emergency department and/or hospitalized at UNCH may inform the SOM Office of Student Affairs, if they wish, so that the SOM can avoid assigning the student to a service on which the student has been a patient. 4. If a resident or attending discovers that s/he is assigned to an evaluative role of a student for whom s/he has provided health care, s/he should contact the course director immediately in order to assign appropriate evaluators. The content of such notification ought not to include evidence of any health care provided (unless the student has provided consent.) 5. Faculty or residents completing the common assessment form are required to certify that they have not been involved in providing health care to the student. http://www.med.unc.edu/md/governance/policies/additional-policies/HealthCareProvidersInvolvemntinAssessment-final.pdf Clinical Rotation Absence Policy • • • • • • • Administrative excuses • Illness • Family emergencies • Doctor’s appointments • Professional conferences • Presenting research • Leadership role Contact Leanne Shook ([email protected]) Notify faculty and house staff preceptors Absences for personal reasons will be evaluated by the clerkship director and granted at their discretion Missing more than 2 days from a 4-week, or 3 days from a 6/8week clerkship could result in an incomplete, withdraw, or failing grade Feel free to contact Student Affairs or advisors with questions http://www.med.unc.edu/www/education/mdprogram/governance/policies/files/Article5Responsibilities ofMedicalStudents2012220.pdf Shelf Exams • Most shelf exams are 100 clinical vignettes to be completed in 2 hours 30 minutes • A growing number of students seem to be subscribing to a Step 2 CK question bank to use throughout third year • Find more information on shelf exams and sample questions at: http://www.nbme.org/PDF/SubjectExams/SE_ContentOutlin eandSampleItems.pdf • Accommodations for shelf exams • Typically extended time and/or distraction free environment • Contact Dr. Ingersoll! • Some students may need additional time during 3rd year even though they did not need it during preclinical years Grade Appeals Process • Article 9 • Level 1: Clerkship director • Level 2: 3rd/4th Year Curriculum committee • Level 3: Executive Associate Dean for Medical Education (Dr. Newton) • http://www.med.unc.edu/www/education/mdprogram/gover nance/policies/files/Article9AppealsProcess20120105.pdf • The “statute of limitations” on appeals will be honored, so review comments and take care of appeals promptly (do not wait until you review your MSPE 4th year) Substance Abuse Policy The purpose of this policy is to describe the conditions under which UNC SOM students may be required to undergo testing for drug or alcohol abuse and to describe the consequences of a positive drug or alcohol screen.
