A
statement of fact tells
something that can be proved
true or false. You can prove it by
reading or asking an expert.
 A statement of opinion tells
someone’s ideas or feelings.
Words that tell feelings, such as
should or best, are clue to
opinion.
 Facts
= can be proven to be
true
 Opinions = what someone
thinks or how someone feels



The way an author looks at the subject or
ideas he or she is writing about is called the
author’s viewpoint, or the author’s bias.
You can learn about the author’s viewpoint
by looking at the words he or she uses and
the opinions he or she expresses.
Look for other clues; for instance, does the
author present only one side of an issue?



You can use context clues to determine the
meaning of multiple-meaning words.
List any unknown words you find as you read

Create a chart showing the unknown word,
helpful context clues, and their definition
