• Today: 13 great features in PerformancePoint Services 2010
• I’m using SQL Server 2012 with SharePoint 2010 SP1
• Most of the items I’m covering will work with SQL 2008R2, but I’ll
indicate anything that’s specific to SQL 2012
• There is a new version of PPS in SharePoint 2013 – not going to
demo it, but I’ll talk about the new features
• Objective of this demonstration is to showcase what PPS can do –
not directly intended to show how to build things from scratch

• Intro to the BI
Stack and
where PPS fits:
• PPS is part of
SharePoint
• Can create
dashboard
content in PPS,
and incorporate
content from
SSRS and Excel

– Specialized business intelligence scorecard creation tool
– Contains a report and charting tool for top level reports/graphs
• Not a full blown reporting tool
• However, has a few interesting features
– Allows us to create an integrated dashboard multi-page
environment in SharePoint, where content from each page could
come from:
• PPS itself
• SSRS (An overlooked feature, will explain why)
• Excel Services, and even Visio Strategy Maps and Proclarity Analytics
– A “specialized” web authoring tool in SP 2010
– Works best against Analysis Services (OLAP) databases (and in
2012, Tabular Databases)
– Want to tap the full power? LEARN MDX programming

• Microsoft released Business Scorecard Manager 2005
• Microsoft purchased technology from Proclarity (their Proclarity
Analytics Product)
• That “became” PerformancePoint Server 2007
• 2 Parts to the Product: Monitoring and Analytics, and a Planning
piece (we’re only interested in the M&A piece)
• Released by the Office team – CTPs throughout 2007, released in
late 2007
• A very interesting first product – a bit quirky on the integrations
and the UI, but produces some nice results
• Microsoft delisted PPS 2007 in early 2009 – announced it would
be integrated with SP 2010 (should have been there all along!)
• PPS 2010 now part of SharePoint 2010 Enterprise

BDBI Radio
• It’s part of SharePoint 2010 Enterprise
• Installed as a service application, much easier to install and
configure than PPS 2007
• Full support for SQL 2008R2 (PPS 2007 initially did not support
SQL 2008, took a few service packs to support)
• GOOD NEWS: if you know how to use the PPS 2007 Dashboard
Designer, the PPS 2010 designer is almost to identical
• Need to create a new SharePoint Site collection as a Business
Intelligence site, and then access the site and create new
dashboard content
• A word about data:
– Using OLAP? Can tap into full power of PPS
– Not using OLAP? Can still use it for integrating from SSRS and Excel

• If you work with PPS, learn the concepts behind KPIs (Key Performance
Indicators) and Balanced Scorecards
• Many books on the subject (Robert Kaplan and David Norton)
• Every KPI has a measure (sales), a goal/target (a data-driven sales goal), a rule
for what constitutes success or failure, and possibly a trend element
• 4 perspectives on KPIs:
– Financial (most common)
• Some might have a goal where we want to be above a goal (sales or profit goals)
• Some might be a threshold, like a returns %, where we want to be below
– Internal Business Process/Operational
• In a manufacturing setting, damage %, shortage or irregular % by floor, shop, etc.
– Customer Satisfaction
• Customer surveys – customer rating/satisfaction scores
• Issue of the quality of the questions and data collection procedures
– Learning and growth
• % of time spent training other employees, % of time spent in training programs, etc.
• Issue of the quality/accuracy of the data

Using PPS to create KPI scorecards from SSAS KPIs
Using PPS to create analytic charts and analytic grids (reports)
Using PPS to create data-bound filter dropdowns with cascading
behavior(new in SharePoint 2010 SP1, and in SharePoint 2013)
Using MDX to customize PPS behavior
Creating KPI scorecards that “hot-link” to charts/reports
Creating manual KPIs without KPIs from SSAS
Allowing users to automatically “drill-down” inside PPS charts/reports
Incorporating deployed SSRS report links into PPS Dashboards
Incorporating deployed Excel Charts into PPS Dashboards
Ability to read SSAS Tabular Models
Users can view PPS Dashboards on an iPad using the Safari Browser (2013)
Free-form filter search – users can type entries to search (2013)
*** MUCH Better dashboard migration to copy dashboard items (2013)
