 Per school guidelines: Only Buena Vista students and
staff are allowed on the playground during recess.
 During lunch, when music is playing, there is no talking.
Students may talk when music is off.

Behavior System

It is important for students to understand why certain behaviors are encouraged or
discouraged at school. Therefore, I have students respond to their actions with apologies
and explanations. If a student is not behaving in line with our class manners they will get a
small red token that reminds them to make respectful choices. If they get a red token they
have to write a short note to me explaining why they got the token and why that behavior is
not acceptable. If they continue to demonstrate poor choices they will visit our classroom
reflection center. In this center they will write a more detailed explanation of their behavior
that will most likely be sent home with them and will require a parent signature. If your
child ever brings home a reflection slip, please use it as an opportunity to discuss their
behavior with them. If there is persistent misbehavior I will contact you directly.
Attendance
• Students who attend school regularly tend to do better
academically than those who are absent and tardy
frequently.
• Turn in notes for absences to the office
• Parents whose child misses 10 or more days will be
required to attend a conference with a school and/or
district administrator.
• Changes in transportation require a parent signature. An
email or phone call cannot be accepted. The office
requires that I send a student home the way indicated on
forms from the start of the year unless we have a signed
note.
Grading Policy
• 10 Points will be deducted each day for late
major projects.
• Spelling counts as 10% of the Language Arts
Grade.
• All other subject are as follows: 60% for minor
grades & 40% for major grades.
• Quizzes and daily grades are equally weighted as
minor grades.

Field Trips
 We have a variety of fun field trips planned
for this year!
 We will go to Roper Mountain Science Center for
classes enhancing our science units of study.
 Our big trip is to Columbia to visit the State
House, State Museum, and Riverbanks Zoo in
April.
 We are planning a virtual field trip this year to
enhance our studies in SS and Science.

What Does a

Look Like?

The Big Jump in 3rd Grade
 Third Grade is when “the rubber hits the
road.”
 Students are making the transition from
primary to intermediate.
 Often the gap between performance
levels can widen during 3rd grade as
expectations and academic demands
increase.
The Keys to 3rd Grade Success!
The 3rd Grade “Big Three”
 Reading EVERY night.
 A study conducted by Anderson, Fielding, and Wilson compared
the amount of student reading with their scores on achievement
tests. The number of minutes spent in out-of-school reading, even
if it was a small amount, correlated positively with reading
achievement. The more students read outside of school the higher
they scored on reading achievement tests. Students who scored at
the 90th percentile on a reading test spent five times as many
minutes as children at the 50th percentile, and more than 200
times as many minutes per day reading books as the child at the
10th percentile. The researchers conclude that “among all the
ways children spent their time, reading books was the best
predictor of measures of reading achievement reading
comprehension, vocabulary, and reading speed, including gains in
reading comprehension between second and fifth grade”
 Daily writing
 Direct writing instruction helps students
become proficient writers. There is a
direct correlation between proficient
writers and reading achievement.
 Mastery of multiplication facts. They
MUST know these “inside, outside,
upside down!”
Syllabus
 The Third Grade follows a grade level
syllabus. It may be viewed from my
website:
 Third Grade Syllabus
SPELLING
 Students are given a pre-test of 15 words on
Monday.
 Our goal is for students to apply the spelling to
their writing.
 Students are tested on their words on Friday.
 5 Word Wall words will be introduced each week.
A dictation quiz will be given on Friday along with
the Spelling test.
 Students must be prepared for the tests on
Friday. They have no required written
assignments, but may use a variety of activities to
help them prepare as they need to.
Science
 Our Science units are
based on district kits
and will include hands
on experiments.
 Our units of study
include:
Process Skills,
Landforms, Earth
Materials, Sound,
Matter, Forces and
Motion, and Plants &
Animals
Social Studies
 In SS, we learn all about South
Carolina, from the geography to the
history through present day.
 SS will sometimes be integrated with
reading.
Reading/ELA
 Reading Workshop C.A.F.E.
and Writing Workshop take
place daily.
 We will implement Common
Core ELA standards through
the Balanced Literacy
program by Fountas and
Pinnell. It is a combination of
whole group, small group, and
leveled reading instruction.
Writing
 Students will be taught a
variety of writing styles and
complete a series of district
writing prompts.
 Language Skills are taught
through the writing program.
 We follow a district writing plan
that is aligned with the state
PASS tests. Students in 3rd,
4th, and 5th grades will take
PASS writing in the Spring.
Math
 Math units will cover a wide
range of math concepts
including Place Value,
Multiplication and Division,
Algebra, Data and Probability,
Fractions.
 Multiplication facts are to be
mastered by the end of 3rd
grade! This only happens with
practice at home!
 This year, all SC schools
implement Common Core
State Standards
HOMEWORK
 Students should study nightly as a part of their
homework
 Students write assignments in their agenda
 Students should be reading at least 20 minutes
every night
 Math practice sheets will come home several times a
week. Please complete this with your child as you
deem necessary or beneficial.
Communication
 Graded papers (although some district tests may not
go home, just a grade report) and other important
communications will come home each Tuesday in
Blue Communication Folders. It is important that you
sign the record sheet and return it the following day.
