Rule 1 – Regular Plurals
- Add s.
Examples: dog/dogs; cat/cats; house/houses
Rule 2 - Nouns ending in s, ch, sh, x or z
- Add es.
Examples: church/churches; wish/wishes; class/classes; box/boxes
Exceptions: When the ch sounds like a k, only add s.
Examples: stomach/stomachs; monarch/monarchs
Rule 3 - Nouns ending in a vowel + y:
- Add s.
Examples: day/days; bay/bays
Rule 4 - Nouns ending in a consonant + y:
- Change the y to an i and add es.
Examples: city/cities; lady/ladies; party/parties
Rule 5 - Nouns ending in a vowel + o:
- Add s.
Examples: radio/radios
Rule 6 - Nouns ending in a consonant + o:
- Add es.
Examples: hero/heroes; tomato/tomatoes
Exceptions: For all musical terms, simply add s.
Examples: piano/pianos; concerto/concertos:
cello/cellos; soprano/sopranos; tango/tangos
Rule 7 - Nouns ending in f or fe:
- Change the f or fe to v and add es.
Examples: life/lives; elf/elves; wife/wives; leaf/leaves
Rule 8 – Certain Animal Plurals:
- Use the same word for the plural.
Examples: sheep, moose, deer
Rule 9 – Always Plurals:
- Some words are always plural.
Examples: Binoculars; clothes; glasses; pants; pyjamas; scissors
Rule 10 - Irregular plurals:
- Change the spelling or change the word.
Examples:
child/children
foot/feet
goose/geese
person/people
man/men
die/dice
woman/women
mouse/mice
ox/oxen
tooth/teeth
