Mary Vosevich

Leadership
Webster:
1. a position as leader of group, organization,
etc.
2. the time when a person holds the position
of leader
3. the power or ability to lead other people
Leadership continued:
 Wikipedia: Leadership has been described as a
“process of social influence in which one person can
enlist the aid and support of others in the
accomplishment of a common task”
 “Somebody whom people follow, or as somebody
who guides or directs others”
 “Organizing a group of people to achieve a common
goal”
Leadership continued:
 Stephen R. Covey: “is communicating to people their
worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired
to see it in themselves.”
With Leadership comes responsibility

As a Leader:
 Invest in your people
 Your staff needs someone to care about them
for who they are
 That they matter
 That they make a difference
Managing vs. Leading
 We have often heard that you manage stuff and you lead
people.
Stuff
 Equipment
 Vehicles
 Computers
 Physical Resources
Managing vs. Leading (continued)
 Each organization needs managers and
leaders…..sometimes they are the same person
 Management skills do not always lead to becoming a
good leader
 A good leader may not be a good manager
How did you get here?
 Was it…..

Power
* “The most common way that people give up their
power is by thinking they don’t have any.” – Alice
Walker
* Don’t wait for power to be offered…take it!
* Let’s not repeat history. Early ‘pioneer’ women have
not helped and in fact viewed other women as
competition.
Lift as you Climb
 Mayo Angelou
 “If I could give you one thought, it would be to lift
someone up…..The very idea of lifting someone up
will lift you as well”
 Be a mentor
Mentoring
Mentoring
Volunteerism
 Maya Angelou also said that you “cannot go through
life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands….you have to
be able to throw something back”
 Be an enabler of success
What can we d0?
 Where do we go from here?
 How do we get or have the will to lead?
 Don’t fall in, plan the journey
Lean In’s Lessons for Girls
 Bossy or executive leadership skills??
 Parents need to commit small acts of assertiveness,
develop this skill
 Educators need to observe the dynamics in a work
group
 Girls should stop apologizing
50%
 Women are 50% of the population. It isn’t
unreasonable to want them to have 50% of the
leadership roles
 Women are now in powerful leadership positions but
may still be referred to as ‘a female facilities
management director’
“Standing on top of a mountain isn’t important;
it is about the journey….
and the lessons you learn along the way.”
Alison Levine
