All boys go through the Oedipus complex
where they sexually desire their mothers and
fear their fathers. The resolution of this
complex leads to the development of the
superego.
Funny, but I don’t remember ever fancying
my mother . . .
Of course you don’t. Your ego has
repressed it into your unconscious mind.
Those memories are inaccessible to you.
 Explain why in this example, the theory of
the Oedipus complex is unfalsifiable.
 Read back through all the evaluation points
on this handout. Highlight in two different
colours the strengths and the weaknesses.
Make sure to write down a key somewhere to
help you when you revise.
 Fill out the PEE table below which will help
you answer the evaluation question.
