Transcript Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures 2 kinds of mixtures 1. heterogeneous mixture – mixture without a fixed composition - substances are not evenly distributed ex. dirt, a salad, granite, sand

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures 2. homogeneous mixture – mixture with a fixed composition - substances are evenly mixed - particles are too small to be seen ex. salt water, alcohol, gasoline

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures 2 kinds of heterogeneous mixtures 1. suspension – mixture in which particles separate out if the mixture is not disturbed - particle size is greater than 1000 nm - particles can be filtered out - aren’t just mixtures of solids and liquids together ex. pulp orange juice, salad dressing, mud, dusty air

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures 2. colloid – mixture in which particles are smaller than a suspension and do not settle out - particle size between 1-1000 nm - does not settle out - pass through most filters - scatter light – known as the Tyndall effect ex. blood plasma, gelatin, egg whites, whipped cream, fog, marshmallows, mayonnaise

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures immiscible – does not mix decant – pour a less dense liquid off a denser liquid emulsion – mixture of two or more immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed in another - type of colloid ex. mayo, cream - proteins coat the droplets and keep them from joining together

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures homogeneous mixtures are also known as solutions - particle size less than 1 nm - particles are evenly dispersed solute – substance that dissolves in a solution solvent – substance in which the solute dissolves

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures - when a solute dissolves it breaks into the smallest particles of that substance miscible – able to be mixed - miscible liquids form solutions ex. rubbing alcohol, gasoline, window cleaner

Chapter 8.1 – Solutions and Other Mixtures - solutions can be made of multiple states mixed together ex. air, soda, air fresheners amalgam – solution of silver dissolved in mercury - amalgams are used in tooth fillings alloy – mixture of two or more metals
