Recess Fun
From: Listening for Basic Concepts
Vocabulary: Behind and In Front
Brennan heard the bell ring.
“Yay,” he thought. “It’s recess
time.” He put on his coat and got
in line behind his friend Bernie.
Brennan’s teacher said, “Brennan, please
come up here and stand in front of the line.
You’ve worked very hard in class today, so I
want you to be our leader.” “Thank you,”
said Brennan as he walked to the front of
the line.
Brennan led his class quietly down the
hall. When they got to the door,
Brennan stood behind it to hold it open
for everyone in his class as they went
outside.
Brennan and his classmates had fun at
recess. First they played tag so they
would stay warm. Brennan raced in
front of the slide just in time to tag
Bernie. “You’re it!” he exclaimed.
After they played tag, Brennan and
some of his classmates played hideand-seek. Brennan hid behind a big
oak tree, but someone found him.
After the hide-and-seek game,
Brennan and his friends played follow
the leader. Everyone stood in a line,
with Brennan in front of everyone else.
Everyone in the line had to copy what
Brennan did. He sure had fun being
the leader.
The last thing Brennan did at recess
was to push Bernie on the swing. He
had to stand behind Bernie so he could
give him a big push.
Just as he finished pushing Bernie, the
bell rang again. “Gosh,” said Brennan,
“it’s time to go inside already.” He got
in front of the line and led his class
back to the room.
“Recess is a lot of fun,”
thought Brennan. “I wish it
would last all day!”
