Principle of
Sacramentality
Taking the word
"sacrament" in its
broadest sense, as the sign
of something sacred and
hidden (mysterious), we
can say that the whole
world is a vast
“sacramental system”, in
that material things are the
signs of things spiritual and
sacred, even the Divinity.
Catholic Encyclopedia
The principle of
sacramentality refers to a
perspective on the world that
acknowledges God’s
presence in all people and in
everything good.
The Sacraments are
"efficacious signs of grace,
instituted by Christ and
entrusted to the Church, by
which divine life is dispensed
to us” CCC 1131

Humans as symbol-makers
• “Among all the creatures on earth, the human
being is the only symbol-making creature for he,
she, or they consciously represent and express
themselves through symbols. In this way human
beings image and participate in the life of the
Divine Being who is the symbol maker par
excellence.”
