Adhesives/Sealants and VOCs
Adhesives and sealants (A&S) are
considered “consumer products”.
 Almost all A&S contain VOCs.
 VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are
specific chemicals that find their way into
the atmosphere and are considered photoreactive.
 VOCs react with ground level ozone to
produce smog.

14
7/21/2015
Controlling VOC levels
Many regions of the country are mandated
by the USEPA to reduce VOC levels.
 The EPA has specified various regions as
“non-attainment” or “maintenance”
management zones.
 Their purpose is to control and/or reduce
the amount of VOC emissions.

15
7/21/2015
16
7/21/2015
How are VOCs managed?

The EPA manages VOC emissions in two
ways:
– Direct Legislation – they set specific VOC
emission levels for A&S under the “consumer
product” category.
– State Implementation Plans (SIPs).
23 states are mandated to have SIPs to reduce
VOC emissions.
 California has the most pervasive and influential.

17
7/21/2015
California Standards

Air quality is regulated by:
– California Air Resources Board (CARB)
– Air Quality Management Districts (AQMD)

There are 36 AQMDs in California each with its
own standards and enforcement.
– California’s air quality regulations, including
those applicable to A&S are helping to define
a national standard.

Ozone Transport Commission




The OTC is made up of thirteen Northeast and
Mid-Atlantic States and the District of Columbia.
They have agreed in principle to adopt CARB as
their new standard.
Five states have passed regulations identical to
CARB that will became effective in 2005 as part
of the own SIP.
Each state is responsible for their own
enforcement.

LEED™ – Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design


LEED is a program administered by the USGBC
(United States Green Building Council).
LEED’s purpose is to certify commercial
buildings as having met specific environmental
and health standards.
– Natural resources conservation.
– Indoor air quality
– Indoor and environmental pollutants.

They do not certify products or companies just
buildings.

A&S in the LEED rating system

Adhesives/Sealants are covered in the LEED rating
system in two possible places.
1. Under Materials & Resources, adhesives may
contribute to Credit 5.1 that specifies a minimum of 20%
of the building materials employed are sourced within
500 miles from the construction site.
2. Under Indoor Environmental Quality, Credit 4.1
Low-Emitting Materials (Adhesives & Sealants), one
point can be awarded for using Adhesives/Sealants that
meet SCAQMD Rule 1168 and BAAQMD Reg. 8, Rule
51 VOC limits.

Solvents




Solvents are currently an integral component in
many adhesive and sealant formulations
Bostik continuously strives to offer materials
with little to no solvent levels, without sacrificing
performance characteristics
This translates into higher solids content,
enhancing the value of our products over the
competition
Many solvents are identified chemically as VOCs
28
7/21/2015
VOC
VOC is an acronym for Volatile Organic
Compounds
 Volatile meaning readily vaporizing at low
temperature
 Organic meaning carbon-based
 Compounds denoting a class of chemicals

29
7/21/2015
VOC Effects

Environmental
– Purportedly causes ground-level smog and formation
of hazardous ozone
– It is theorized that ground level ozone formation has
contributed in the global warming phenomenon
– Water pollutant

Health and Safety
– May compromise indoor air quality, resulting in
adverse health effects such as respiratory tract
irritation, dizziness, headaches, etc.

Defining and Regulating
VOCs
The organization with the broadest
jurisdiction in defining, regulating, and
monitoring VOC in the marketplace is the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
 All Chem-Calk and Bostik Home Products
meet the standards set forth by the EPA

31
7/21/2015
Defining and Regulating
VOCs




Other organizations have determined that more
stringent VOC guidelines are necessary to protect the
environment
One of the most stringent guidelines has been
established by the South Coast Air Quality
Management District in California (SCAQMD)
<50 g/L for Sub-floor Adhesives (<70 g/L General
Purpose Adhesives), <250 g/L Sealants
All Chem-Calk and Bostik Home products meet this
VOC guideline, with the exception of the HDCA
32
7/21/2015
Defining and Regulating
VOCs





Preserving the environment and promoting the health and wellbeing of the consumer can be two distinct objectives
Thus, an organization known as CARB has established yet another
VOC guideline for consumer products such as adhesives and
sealants
< 4% by weight for most Sealants, <15% for most Adhesives
Containers > 16 oz or weigh more than a pound less packaging,
Roofing products, insulting foams, removable caulking
compounds, floor seam sealers, products designed exclusively for
automotive users, sealers that are applied as continuous coatings,
and clear sealants are not regulated by CARB.
All Chem-Calk and Bostik Home materials meet this standard in
current packaging.
33

Defining and Regulating
VOCs





Another organization concerned with consumer products
and related VOC content is the Ozone Transport
Commission (OTC)
The OTC is a coalition of Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic
states
The OTC has adopted the CARB VOC guidelines
< 4% by weight for Sealants, <15% for most Adhesives
Therefore, all Chem-Calk and Bostik Home materials
meet this standard
34
7/21/2015
VOC-Exempt






There is another class of solvents known as VOC-Exempt
solvents
These are chemicals which do not contribute to groundlevel ozone or promote smog
However, many of these chemicals have associated
health risks for humans
Safe for environment does not equate to safe for human
beings
Many competitive products incorporate these VOC
exempt solvents into their products in order to meet VOC
regulations, without considering their effect on the
applicator

Exploiting a loophole is not Bostik’s approach!

GBI – LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT

The building sector is being called upon to
help fight climate change by achieving
ambitious reduction targets for greenhouse
gas emissions while at the same time
incorporating other “green” considerations.
Life cycle assessment (LCA) – which
allows the impartial comparison of
building designs based on measures such
as global warming potential – is an
essential part of this effort.
42

GBI – LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT

With introduction of the ATHENA®
EcoCalculator for Assemblies, architects,
engineers and others now have access to instant
LCA results for hundreds of common building
assemblies. The results embedded in the tool are
based on detailed assessments completed with
the ATHENA®Impact Estimator for Buildings,
which in turn uses ATHENA’s own widely
acclaimed datasets and data from the US Life
Cycle Inventory Database (www.nrel.gov/lci ).


Developed by the ATHENA Institute in
association with the University of Minnesota and
Morrison Hershfield Consulting Engineers , the
tool was commissioned by the Green Building
Initiative™ (GBI) for use with the Green
Globes™ environmental assessment and rating
system. Because of its value as an indicator of
climate change impacts, the GBI also supported
the team’s creation of a generic version for use
by the entire sustainable design community.

Building Market

Bostik has been one of the first sealant suppliers
in North America to introduce zero solvent, zero
isocyanate high performance paintable sealants,
Bostik 2020. By developing in-house a modified
polyurethane technology, Bostik was able to
propose a high performance solution to building
contractors which reduces the level of emissions,
including the emission of formaldehyde, released
by conventional construction sealants.

Building Market

Bostik, with its new residential line, Bostik
Home Series, addresses the issues related to the
lack of hermeticity of residential building
envelops by developing specific sealants for
roofing, flashing, siding, window and door.
These sealants have been designed to work for
specific applications and in conjunction with
specific materials to assure maximum
performance. Bostik’s latest Window and Door
Sealant showing full compatibility with window

Transportation and Industry
Markets

Bostik was one of the first adhesive manufacturers in
North America to contribute to improving occupational
health and safety in plants where adhesives and sealants
are processed everyday. Bostik, with its innovative cold
applied MS polymer-based, solvent-free, isocyanate-free
primer less adhesive and sealant line of products,
SIMSON, has reduced the emission of solvents and
vapors as well as possible exposure to isocyanate at large
assembly OEMs. This primer less system was welcome
by the workers and by the unions representing them and
has also accelerated the assembly speed by bypassing the
priming station. It has also provided relief for
manufacturing facilities having difficulties to reduce their
VOC emissions to the level required by new regulations
like CARB, OTC and AQMDs.
51
7/21/2015
Transportation and Industry
Markets

Reduction of cost per part as well as
drastic reduction of emissions and possible
exposure to chemicals is a proven record
of this new technology. This new bonding
technology also allows designers and
engineers to use composite and lightweight
organic materials to be assembled together
to replace heavier materials such as metals
and glass.
52
7/21/2015
Transportation and Industry
Markets

Bostik has also reinvented its line of anti
seize compounds, Never-Seez. Ahead of
the regulation changes for this category,
Bostik Heavy Metal Free Never-Seez is
used when the presence of copper, nickel
or other heavy metals is prohibited.
53
7/21/2015
Packaging

Bostik has been running a consistent program
with OEMs to reduce packaging waste. We are
converting OEMs from rigid packaging like
cartridges and metal cans to flexible lightweight
packaging like sausages. This new packaging is
reducing the total weight of empty packaging by
an order of 20. In order to convert customers to
this innovative light weight packaging, Bostik is
providing for FREE through an exchange
program processing equipment able to use this
new packaging.
54
7/21/2015
Freight and Transport Alliances
with Local Distributors

Bostik has teamed up with local distributors to
optimize its distribution logistic. By asking
distributors to place large orders with us and by
having distributors consolidating products of
many manufacturers sold locally to their end
users, the number of trucks and trips needed to
bring products from our factories to the final
end-users has been reduced dramatically. By
continuing to move up the minimum quantity
qualifying for a shipment from our factories to
distributors, we are expecting to lower even
further the impact of our transport of goods on
the environment.
