Parent Night Understanding the Common Core
K-8 Common Core: Overview
Former 1989 Standards were “
a mile wide and an inch deep.
” Common Core standards were developed from the 2006 Focal Points were established from National Council of Teacher of Mathematics. This is not a political or government agenda. These fewer Common Core Standards aim for clarity and specificity asking students to demonstrate both fluency and conceptual understanding of content areas.
Provide students with a solid foundation by 5 applications.
th
grade in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals—building the foundation needed to apply more demanding math concepts and procedures, and move into
Common Core: Overview
6 th -8 th Grade Standards are intended for students to
apply their procedural skill and conceptual
understanding with hands-on learning in geometry, algebra, and probability and statistics.
Prepare students for Algebra in Grade 8
More Rigorous (not rigor as in more advanced in grade level – instead requiring a combination of conceptual understanding, fluency and application of the concepts)
A well-balanced mathematics program includes:
• Conceptual understanding • Procedural proficiency • Mathematical processes

What can you do at home to help?
Practice math skills at home on concepts that your student needs help (the skills that they are approaching or below standard in).

Parent Letters
Read your child’s weekly letters, it will tell you what is happening in the math classes and what concepts your child is working on in class. www.rethinkmathematics.com

Common Core Standards
Are aligned with college and work expectations. Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills.
Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards. Are internationally benchmarked.
Are evidence and/or research-based.
The Common Core State Standards will:
Help prepare all students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and careers.
Assist students who move between states. Create the opportunity for America to compete for high-wage, high-skill jobs in a knowledge-based economy.
Create economies of scale around areas such as curriculum, instructional resources, and assessment.
Role of the Teacher:
While the standards set expectations for student learning for each grade level, they do not prescribe how the standards should be taught. Teachers should use their skills, experience, talents, and resources to design standards-based classroom lessons that meet the needs of individual students.
