The French Explore Texas
Let’s Review!
Native Americans live alone in Texas for
almost 11,600 years!
Then Europeans come searching for God,
Gold, and Glory
Columbus explores in 1492, and then many
other Spaniards follow in his footsteps
(Pineda, Cabeza de Vaca, Coronado, etc.).
They don’t find much gold and leave for a
while…
…UNTIL
La Salle
Almost 80 years
after Oñate!
La Salle’s Expedition
La Salle was one of the first French
explorers in Texas
His expeditions revived Spanish interest
in Texas
He named Louisiana & built Fort St.
Louis
Congratulations!
You have all been selected to join
an expedition to the New World led
by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de
La Salle. As French citizens, it is
your responsibility to establish a
colony in the territory of Louisiana
at the mouth of the Mississippi
River.
You will begin your expedition in four
ships sailing from France. Each ship
will have 15 barrels of food aboard.
Remember to use your resources
wisely because you do not know what
you will find in the New World.
Bon Voyage!
S.O.S.!
Oh, no! One of your ships has
been captured by a Spanish
buccaneer! Everyone aboard the
ship has been killed or enslaved,
and all the supplies have been
confiscated. Starting your colony
will be even more difficult now….
Where do we land?
You need to find the mouth of the
Mississippi River, but the area has
many streams and swamps and
you don’t know where to land. You
spend several months searching for
the mouth of the river. As a result,
you use half of your remaining
food.
Shipwreck!
You decide to go ashore even
though you have not found the
Mississippi – but one of your ships
hits a sandbar and sinks. All the
people aboard make it to shore,
but all the supplies are lost.
Friends or foes?
You meet a group of natives on the
shore. They seem friendly, but later
you see them with some of your
supplies from the wrecked ship. You try
to take them back, and fighting breaks
out. Some of you are killed.
Meanwhile, you are setting up your
colony – Fort St. Louis. You use three
barrels of food.
Hard Times
Your colony is experiencing lots of
problems. There is not much rain,
and the crops you planted are
dying. Many people are sick from a
mysterious disease you have never
seen before. It is hard for you to
find food, so you are using up lots
of the food barrels you brought.
In search of help…
Your leader, La Salle, has decided
to take a small expedition east to
the Mississippi River. He hopes to
find a way to bring back extra
supplies. He needs three people to
go with him on this trip. Who
wants to come?
If at first you don’t succeed….
Despite the failure of the earlier
expedition, La Salle is going to try
again to find the Mississippi. He
needs three volunteers. Who
wants to go with him this time?
Giving up…
After all the death and sickness, you
decide to accept defeat. Some of you
will journey north to Canada (where
there are other French colonists) and
from there go to France. Once you get
to France, you will ask the king to send
ships back to collect the rest of the
colonists. Who wants to go, and who
wants to stay and wait for rescue?
Stranded…
Those who went to Canada make it all
the way back to France and tell their
story to the king. Frustrated by the
failure, the king refuses to send ships
back to the New World to collect the
survivors. Those who stayed behind
will die of disease, hunger, or Indian
attacks. C’est triste, n’est-ce pas?
