Moscow
Moscow, the capital of Russia, was founded 8
centuries ago by Prince Yury Dolgoruky.
Moscow is one of the largest cities in Europe.
Its total area is about 900 square km. The
population of the city is over 11 million people.
The history of Moscow began in 1147, and since then Moscow
has always had a leading position in the life of the whole country.
Twenty towers of the Kremlin wall were
constructed in the end of the 17th century.
The main Kremlin tower,
the Spasskaya Tower, has
become the symbol of the
country.
The Kuranty
It has a famous clock; one can
hear the clock on the radio.
The Kremlin walls is a combination of churches and palaces,
which are open to the public and are among the city's most
popular tourist attractions.
The best starting point of the tour around the city is Red Square, the
central and the most beautiful squares in Moscow. It is a place of
parades, meetings and demonstrations.
St. Basil’s Cathedral
Here one can see St.Basil's cathedral, erected by architects Postnik and
Barma to commemorate Russia's conquest of the Kazan Kingdom in 1552.
There is a legend, that Ivan the Terrible blinded the architects Barma and
Postnik, because he didn't want them to create another masterpiece.
The monument to Minin & Pozharskiy
Touirists can see the monument to Minin and Pozharsky designed by
Ivan Martos in 1818 in memory of the Russian victory over the
Polish invaders. On the monument you can read the following
words: “To citizen Minin and prince Pozharsky from grateful Russia”.
There is the History
Museum in Red Square.
Its collections tell us
interesting stories about
the history of our
country and the life of
its people from old times
to our days.
Around the central Cathedral
Square (Sobornaya Ploshchad)
are grouped three magnificent
cathedrals of late 15th and early
16th centuries. The white stone
Cathedral of the Assumption
(Uspensky Sobor) is the oldest,
the Cathedral of the Annunciation
(Blagoveshchensky Sobor), The
third cathedral, the Archangel
(Arkhangelsky) where are buried
the princes of Moscow and tsars
of Russia (except Boris
Godunov).

On the territory of the Kremlin you can see old cathedrals, the
Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, the Palace of Congresses, the
Tzar-Cannon and the Tzar-Bell, the biggest cannon and bell
in the world
The Armoury Chamber
One of the well-known
Kremlin museums is
the Armoury Chamber
housing a large
collection of
treasures of the
Tsars.
The Golden Cap of Monomach
The famous golden cap of
Monomach, the first
Russian imperial crown of
Catherine the Great and
many other historical items
are exhibited there.
The Palace of Congresses
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
The Alexander Garden with the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier is the place of memory

Bolshoi Opera House

If you are interested in arts you'd better visit the Tretyakov Art Gallery which contains
fantastic Russian icons, monumental paintings and historical themes performed by
Peredvizhniki, Repin, Surikov, Levitan and other great artists.
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
If you visit the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts you'll admire the
magnificent display of West-European paintings of the 13th-20th
centuries.
The Park of Culture & Rest
The citizens of Moscow enjoy spending their weekends in parks and
gardens - the Park of Culture and Rest, Izmailovo, Sokolniki.
