A season in review…
It was a season that in February saw a record number of girls show up for tryouts. From
this group emerged the 17 players on the 2008 roster. From the beginning this team seemed
special both in talent and approach. They came into the season expecting to build on the success
that past teams had to worked so hard to achieve. Led by a trio of seniors, the team established
themselves early as the district favorite.
The season stretched on and the girls battled through injury, poor weather and the
frequent late night road trips. Throughout, the team managed to stay focused. One major test
came when the team had to play a stretch of 8 matches in 12 days, with 4 of those in a row. It was
the match against county rival Western during this span which showed what the Patriots were
made of. Taking a 2-1 lead after doubles where all 3 matches were decided 11-9, the big red
machine went to work in singles and dispatched the Warriors 7-2. The wins continued until the
regular season came to a close and had tallied16 wins, but had yet to lose a match. The post
season followed and was highlighted by a defense of the district tournament title from ‘07
All 17 players saw action in the top 6 ladder and made quick work of most opponents.
The freshman class comprised almost half of the team and was led by #1 seed Megan Napolitano.
Elise Lord, Tori Kuhn and Abby Lesnoff also played key role with solid play in the top 6 all
season. The remaining freshman of Ivy Haines, Stacey Hahn and Maddi McCullough raised
their level of play each day and provide the program with a bright future. During their
sophomore campaign Eva Ng and Yvonne Zhang along with Vicky Zarate brought some
enthusiastic play and will look to build on the foundation of the past two season. The junior class
of Alison Angell, Emmaline Horton, Valentina Moshnikova and newcomer Alissa Tucker
provided steady play and look to do so again next year on a team that will have to replace three
seniors. Victoria Yu a member of the team for 3 years and the talented co-captain duo of Kelly
Anderson and Morgan Watt, starters since their freshman season who both played #1 during
their careers, guided this team to another 20 win season. In the past 4 seasons the team has
amassed an impressive 71 wins and lost only 12 times and has gone 48-3 in the district, without a
loss the past 2 seasons. They have won back to back Commonwealth district titles and one
Northwest Region Title. The first for the school since 1981. Twice the team has appeared in the
state tournament. It is truly an impressive legacy. One that will no doubt take a great deal of
effort to maintain.
When the Patriots fell in the Northwest Region Semi-Finals they had equaled last seasons
overall record but fell 1 match short of making the state quarter-finals. The 2008 squad has
again raised the bar and put the competition on notice that this team from Albemarle is a
formidable program built on talent, hard work and the idea of team.
Kelly, Morgan, and Victoria
3 great seniors who will be missed...
Good luck next year at
UVA, Syracuse and Tech!
“Thanks for all you have given to the team.”
