SOLVING INEQUALITIES
Definition:
To “solve” an inequality means to find all
values of the variable for which the
statement is true.
EX: 2x + 4 < 14
You solve these problems the same way you solve a
problem with an equal sign (with one slight exception)
Procedures that leave the inequality symbol
unchanged.
Simplifying on one side of the inequality:
5x 2x 5 15 11
Add/Subtract the same amount to both sides:
3x 5 4
Multiply/Divide the same positive amount to both sides:
3x 9
Procedure that reverses the inequality symbol.
Multiply/Divide by the same negative amount on both sides
2x 6

All together:
3x 2 1
4 2 x 3 12
On your own:
4x 7 2x 3
