SOLVING INEQUALITIES
Definition:
 To “solve” an inequality means to find all
values of the variable for which the
statement is true.
 EX: 2x + 4 < 14
 You solve these problems the same way you solve a
problem with an equal sign (with one slight exception)
Procedures that leave the inequality symbol
unchanged.
 Simplifying on one side of the inequality:
5x  2x  5  15 11
 Add/Subtract the same amount to both sides:
3x  5  4
 Multiply/Divide the same positive amount to both sides:
3x  9
Procedure that reverses the inequality symbol.

Multiply/Divide by the same negative amount on both sides
 2x  6
:
All together:
3x  2  1
4  2 x  3  12
On your own:
4x  7  2x  3
