SUSTAINABILITY… What does it
mean????
• Sustainable means that it can be used
continuously…. The ability of something
to keep on going.
• If a fuel is sustainable it means that it can
continuously be used without running out!
WHAT DOES RENEWABLE
MEANS?
• Renewable energy means that after we
use it we can use it again.
• Fossil fuels are made 300 million years
ago and can only be used once
• Renewable energy like the sun or the wind
can be used again and again without
worrying about it being finished eventually!

KINDS OF RENEWABLE
ENERGY?

WATER
• Also called hydroelectricity
• Water runs down the
mountains to turn big
wheels that make
electricity
• Provides about 10%
of electricity in the US
SUN
• Also called Solar Power
• It dries our clothes, heats
our home, creates food in
the form of plants and
has been used by man
for 4million years!
• Solar panels are being
used more to harness this
energy and turn it into
electricity and even drive
cars!
WIND
• Has been used for
centuries to grind
wheat and sail our
boats across the
ocean
• Windmills are going
up all over North
America to make
electricity
• NO pollution!
OCEAN
• Can harness energy
in three ways
– The Waves
– The Tide
– The Thermal heat
• Still not used very
much but becoming
more popular
• Tide energy was used
1000 years ago!
NUCLEAR ENERGY
• Genius work of Albert
Einstein
• By splitting apart the
middle of an atom we
release A LOT of energy
in the form of light and
heat
• Fueled by URANIUM
• No air pollution but
because it is a chain
reaction produces
dangerous left over
“radioactive” waste
BIOMASS
• Everything from dead
trees, crops, yard
clippings, old tires
and manure!
• Making energy from
other people’s
garbage.
• California’s garbage
in a year could
provide the energy to
fuel 2 million homes!
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
• Thousands of miles deep
the center of the earth is
red hot liquid MAGMA
• When water comes close
to the magma it can
sometimes be released in
cracks in the earth
producing ENORMOUS
energy
• Yellowstone National
Park is the biggest
volcano on earth but all
UNDER THE GROUND!
THE CARS WE DRIVE….
• In the US….about one
half of the energy we
produce is for
transportation!
• The US uses more Oil for
energy than any other
country on the earth!!
Almost half the earth’s oil
is used by the US alone
• This oil pollutes the air,
Even the cleaner forms
pollute the waterways!
WHAT IS THE STATE IN NORTH
AMERICA???
• GETTING WORSE!!!
• We are actually increasing the amount of
pollutants that we make because we are
continuing to driver BIGGER vehicles like
minivans and SUVs!
• The cleaner forms of gasoline being developed
are found to be using a chemical called MTBE
which SPECIFICALLY poisons are rivers and
lakes
HOW ELSE DOES GASOLINE
AND OIL AFFECT US???
• ENVIRONMENT
– We are poisoning our air in the form of Greenhouse gases
– We are poisoning our waterways in the form of toxins
• POLITICS
– We depend on the Middle East and other foreign countries for oil
and are vulnerable to war and unrest
• SOCIALLY
– Oil and car companies are often corrupt drilling in the middle
east and the arctic without thinking of people or environment!
• MONEY
– We take resources from poorer countries in order to make
money to keep our own energy needs funded
HOW CAN WE CHANGE OUR
BEHAVIOR???
• Drive less!!
– take your bike, or walk or share a ride with a
friend
• Better Cities!!
– make your city build so that people can walk,
have parks and get around without a car
• Make Cars Cleaner!!!
– How can we do this??
WHAT ARE OTHER WAYS THAT
WE CAN DRIVE OUR CARS???

HOW CAN WE USE THE ENERGY

RIGHT NOW WE ARE USING
OIL….A FOSSIL FUEL
• What do you remember about fossil
fuels??
• What are the problems?
• Where do we get them?
• What do they do to the air?
• What do they do to the water?
• How long to they take to re-make?
HYDROGEN FUEL CELLS
• Combines Hydrogen
with Oxygen in the air
to produce a powerful
car with no pollution!
• Quiet to Drive.
• Expensive right now
to make the engine?
HYBRID CARS….USING
ELECTRICITY!
• Cars can work just
like other appliances
in your house and you
can plug them in to
power them up!
• Public charging
stations being built
• Uses both electricity
and gas
RIDING THE WIND!
• Big wind propellers at
one place can be
used to send energy
along cables to trains
and other public
transport vehicles like
the C-Train in
Calgary, Canada

• Problem: it doesn’t work
at night!!!
• Likely not enough energy
to fuel a car that a family
would use
• Can be combined with
other methods of
producing energy though
BIODIESEL
• Oil that comes from
vegetables is treated
and combined with an
alcohol to make
biodiesel. It smells a
little like french fries
• Provided that crops
are grown sustainably
this is a sustainable
solution to fuel
WHICH OF THESE TYPES OF
CARS DO YOU THINK ARE
GOING TO WORK?
• Which do you think is the most expensive?
• Which do you think is the easiest to get?
• Which do you think is being used the most
right now?
• Which do you think is the best idea for the
government to start using?
THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS!!
• Alternative fuels for cars range from the
sun, to vegetables, to electricity to the
wind!!!
• With so many ways to fuel our cars why do
we keep using oil which poisons our water
and our air???
• Why don’t we start using the solutions that
we already know work?

TRANSPORTATION THAT YOU
COULD USE RENEWABLE
ENERGY!!
