To rebuild Europe and Japan after World War II. 7/21/2015 2 World Bank Early Borrowers 7/21/2015 n France first to borrow $250 million to finance post-war reconstruction in 1947. n Many current donor nations such as Austria, Australia, Denmark, Italy, Korea, and Greece were borrowers. 3 What Does the World Bank Do Today? In fiscal 2009, the World Bank Group sponsored 767 projects with a total commitment of $58.8 billion, distributed in credits, loans, grants, and guarantees. IBRD committed $32.9 billion for 126 new operations. IDA committed a record $14 billion for 176 new operations in 63 low-income countries, a 25 % increase over last year. 7/21/2015 4 Where does the money come from? IBRD raises funds on capital markets (rate lower than commercial banks). Of which, US$ 6.9 billion has been disbursed. 7/21/2015 10 Increasing Lending Program FY10 (July 09 - June 10) : 16 Projects with total lending amounts of US$ 2.4 billion.
