HOW TO PASS A TEST… 1. DON’T ALWAYS START WITH THE FIRST QUESTION. If you are unsure of the answer to the first question then pass it and go on to the next until you find one that you know and start there. Then you can come back to the first question, and any others you’ve skipped, to complete your test. Why? Sometimes it takes a few minutes to get your mind focused on taking a test and easing into the test helps. 2. KEEP YOUR EYES ON YOUR OWN PAPER. Why? You don’t want to appear to be cheating and when you take your eyes off the paper you disengage your mind and have to restart it again when you look back down. If you need a rest, just look at your pencil! 3. DO THE EASIEST PROBLEMS FIRST. Why? Building confidence at the moment of test taking will relax your mind and help you to think. 4. READ THE ENTIRE QUESTION FIRST THEN GO BACK AND LOOK FOR KEY WORDS. Why? Sometimes answers to questions or the actual questions are hidden within the wording of the question. 5. HIGHLIGHT KEY WORDS IN EACH QUESTION. Why? Highlighted words are easier to find when you need to look back at the question as you search for the answer. 6. FILL IN THE CIRCLES ON YOUR ANSWER SHEET CAREFULLY. Why? Marks that are too light or stray outside of the circle may be counted wrong or even skipped by the computer scoring system. 7. DON’T WORRY IF YOU FINISH THE TEST LATER THAN OTHERS. Why? People who finish tests quickly often miss questions that they hurried through. Work at a steady pace. Pace yourself to finish 10-15 minutes before the test time ends. This gives you time to look back at questions if needed. 8. READ THE QUESTION CAREFULLY. CHECK TO SEE IF THERE IS ONLY ONE ANSWER OR IF THERE ARE SEVERAL ANSWERS. Why? Some questions may tell you to find the BEST answer among other answers that may also be correct but not the BEST. 9. ON THE EOC, IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER, GIVE IT YOUR BEST GUESS. LEAVE NO ANSWERS BLANK! Why? On the EOC, answers left blank are counted as incorrect anyway! 10. MARK OUT ANSWERS YOU KNOW ARE NOT CORRECT. Why? Narrowing down your choices can help you select the best answer. 11. GIVE QUESTIONS YOU AREN’T SURE ABOUT THE “TRUE-FALSE” TEST. Why? By asking yourself if each answer statement is true or false you will be able to eliminate some of them. 12. READ ALL OF THE ANSWERS BEFORE SELECTING ONE. Why? “All of the above” and “A and B but not C” kinds of answers will usually have those selections as the last answer choice. 13. USE HINTS FROM QUESTIONS YOU KNEW TO HELP ANSWER QUESTIONS YOU DON’T KNOW. Why? As you read questions notice if the information in one question can give you a hint to the answer to one you didn’t know. 14. USE A B OR C FOR QUESTIONS TO WHICH YOU HAVE NO IDEA. PICK ONE OR THE OTHER AND USE THAT FOR ALL QUESTIONS FOR WHICH YOU HAVE NO IDEA. Why? Statistically you have a better chance of getting a question right if you select only one “wild card” answer and stick to it. 15.WHEN YOU HEAR A FINAL 5MINUTE WARNING, QUICKLY MARK ALL UNANSWERED QUESTIONS WITH A “C” or “B”. Why? A blank answer is a wrong answer so any answer is better than none. Research shows that more test answers are placed in the “C” or “B” position than in any other position. (After you have marked all the unanswered questions, you can then go back and change them as time allows.)
