Tropical rainforests are found in a belt around the Equator of the
Earth. The 4800 km wide band is called the "tropics”.
 The largest rainforests are in the Amazon River Basin (South
America), the Congo River Basin (Western Africa), and throughout
much of Southeast Asia. Smaller rainforests are in the biggest
continents.
Tropical and temperate rainforests share characteristics:
*Most roots of the trees come out at the base.
* Vegetation is dense, tall and very green. Both types of
rainforests are rich in plants and animal species, although
the diversity is greater in the tropical rainforest.
The tropical rain forest is a very wet environment,
that is why it is called “RAIN FOREST”
The total rainfall for the year is
between 1500 and 2500 mm.
The temperature in a rainforest never
freezes and never gets very hot.
At night it drops to
between 20ºC - 25ºC
The range of temperature in a
tropical rainforest is usually
between 75° F and 80° F (24-27°
C).
The relative humidity is always
high.
The plants and animals of the
rainforest provide us with food,
fuel wood, shelter, jobs, and
medicines.
If there were no plants
or trees producing air,
life as we know could
not exist.
One major reason is that the plants
in the forest turn carbon dioxide
into clean air doing the
photosynthesis, which helps us
fight pollution and give us clean air
to breath.
EMERGENTS TREES:
Giant trees that are
much higher than the
average canopy height.
Many birds and insects
live there. This is the
highest level of the
rainforest.
UNDERSTORY: A
dark, cool area under
the leaves but over
the ground. The lower
canopy extends from
the base of the trees
to just below the
upper canopy. It is the
way for animals to get
to the higher parts of
the trees.
CANOPY: The upper parts of
the trees is an area full of life
that includes: insects, birds,
reptiles, mammals, and
more.
The upper canopy, is found
just below the emergent
trees.
FOREST FLOOR:
It is full of animal
life, especially
insects. The
largest animals in
the rainforest
generally live here.
Why are plants in danger ?
Plants are in danger because of the
rainforest deforestation.
We are losing about 50,000
species per year.
Experts estimate that we are losing 137 plants,
species every single day due to rainforest
deforestation.

Sugar comes from two
principal sources: Sugar
Cane - a large bamboo
type plant up to 5 meters
and more. Sugar Beet grown in colder climates, it
looks like a turnip.
The map on the left shows the
main sugar cane growing regions in
the world today
Sugar Cane is grown
in mainly tropical climates,
but it can be found as far
north as Southern Spain
and as far south as
Southern Australia

The white coffee flower has
five petals and a scent resembling
that of jasmine.
The coffee tree starts
flowering at 2-4 years old
and it can simultaneously
have flowers and berries
in all stages of
development. The coffee
tree is a shrub with a
straight trunk, which can
survive for about 50 to 70
years.

The tree grows an
oblong fruit commonly
called a pod, which can be
four to 12 inches long.
Oil Palm
The oil palm has thirty uses
Some are:
oil, Baskets, mats , Fences,
drying racks, women items,
palm wine

When we take some rock salt
and perhaps some hot chilly
peppers, one can drink sap.
The Sap is the sticky thing that you
can find in the trees.
This is the sap
The sap is very sweet and
contains little alcohol in the
morning when it is first taken from
the tree.
The first task at each tree
is to collect the sap
which has gathered
inside the tree.
With the sap you
can make wine.
To take the Sap from the trees
you have to cut a hole on the
top side of the fallen trunk
.Then you must cut a thin
slice off the side on the
higher end of the hole so that
the sap still inside the trunk
will flow into the hole.

Praying mantis’ excellent eyesight allows some to see movement up to 60 feet (18
meters) away.
Mantis can turn their heads 180 degrees to. Typically green or brown and well
camouflaged on the plants among which they live.

They are carnivores,
feeding mostly on insects.
,They prefer crickets,
flies, grasshoppers and
moths.
The red-eyed tree frogs can
even become a dark green or
reddish-brown color.
They are found in the lowlands and on
slopes of Central America and as far as
Mexico.

The Rain Forest is been cut down because poor
people chop the wood to make money and for
farming.
It has been estimated that every minute
an area of forest the size of 4 football
pitches is cut down.
Some Rain Forests may
have existed largely
undisturbed for 150
million years!
Rainforests once covered 14% of the
earth's land surface; now they cover a
mere 6% and experts estimate that the
last remaining rainforests could be
consumed in less than 40 years.
Animals will be destroyed, and many
possible cures for life-threatening
diseases.
There were an estimated ten
million Indians living in the
Amazonian Rainforest five
centuries ago. Today there are
less than 200,000.
How to save the Rain Forest?
Marichan y Charlotte Toni,
Buy food like
bananas and
coffee that are
grown in a way
that is safe to
the environment
Recycle paper instead
of throwing it to the
trash
How to save the Rainforest
Use less paper
Plant trees
instead of
cutting them
