Purpose: This digital portfolio was designed for the McDaniel College School Library Media Program and organized according to Standard Four of the AASL/NCATE Standards for Programs for School Library Media Specialist Preparation. Standard 4: Program Administration 4.1 Managing Information Resources 4.2 Managing Program Resources 4.3 Comprehensive and Collaborative Strategic Planning and Assessment School Library Media Program Mission and Vision Statements Mission Statement: My mission is to provide the highest quality resources and instruction as well as encourage the life long loves of reading and learning. Vision Statement The media center seeks to meet and exceed the needs, interests, and wants of every person in the school community. Visitors will feel welcomed in an attractive and organized setting and will find high quality resources and materials. The media specialist and media assistant are friendly, approachable, and helpful to all patrons and assist with all requests. The print and electronic collections will be tailored to the needs of the students and teachers in the school. Specific print sections, reading levels, and electronic resources will be selected based on curricular programs, teacher requests and advice and students’ instructional needs and personal interests. Materials will also be selected in response to teacher, administrator, and other staffs’ personal and professional interests. The media center is a resource not just for the students’ learning and interests, but also for the needs and interests of the adults in the building. A section or sections of professional journals, magazines, and a staff book exchange is available to every adult in the building. The media center is the hub and literal center of the school and an outreach to the community. Day and evening functions occur in the media center to promote school library programs as well as other school and community programs and events. The media center is a natural gathering place to promote school, student, and staff achievements. Back to Top 4.1 Managing Information Resources: Selecting, Organizing, Using Reflection: The reference section is important in any library. When patrons come to the library to do research they will look to the electronic and print reference collections for information. The SLMS must maintain a varied collection that includes a variety of resources and organization systems. Materials that are ordered must also be appropriate for the different levels of learners in the school. It is critical for the SLMS to know which materials are the best and latest available. The reference collections and latest reference publications should be reviewed annually to maintain excellent reference resources. I enjoyed creating my reference bibliography, comparing my list to my school’s holdings, and to those resources the staff use and request. Several criteria must be considered when compiling a book order. Some of these are the needs and interests Back to Top 4.1 Managing Information Resources Artifact: Fall 2005 Book Order Picture of Artifact 4.3 Comprehensive and Collaborative Strategic Planning and Assessment 4.3 Comprehensive and Collaborative Strategic Planning and Assessment Reflection The SLMS is charged with maintaining a library media center that serves the needs of all students and the curricula they must learn. The Curriculum Chart assignment was an excellent way to chart the objectives of the many curricula in a school. With an up to date record of the information to be learned the SLMS can order appropriate content and extension materials and provide relevant instructional and technical support. A regularly updated curriculum chart will also serve to keep the media specialist informed of content class changes and plan ahead to adapt areas of the collection to the new changes. As an expert on every curriculum in the school, the SLMS will place him or her self as an instructional leader in the school. The SLMS may also have the unique opportunity to make interdisciplinary or inter-grade connections for special projects or units.
