What Jesus Preached
About His Kingdom
o Kingdom of heaven- 32 times in Matthew
o Kingdom of God- 54 times in MatthewJohn
o Kingdom- 22 times alone
o One of the most common themes of
Jesus’ preaching and teaching
o It was a common subject of the prophets
o Jesus used it in a different sense than the
Jews expected.
Passages of Jesus On Kingdom
John 18:33-36
33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall
again, and called Jesus, and said unto him,
Art thou the King of the Jews?
34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing
of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own
nation and the chief priests have delivered
thee unto me: what hast thou done?
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this
world: if my kingdom were of this world,
then would my servants fight, that I should
not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my
kingdom not from hence.
John 18:36
o Jesus says His kingdom is not an earthly
kingdom.
o He did not come to make Israel a great
nation again. He did not come to earth to
set up a kingdom on this earth.
o He is clear when he says this to Pilate.
o If He was going to set up an earthly
kingdom his servants would defend it
physically.
Jesus Speaks About The
Kingdom
o Matt 4:17
o 17 From that time Jesus began to
preach, and to say, Repent: for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand.
o The term (engus) ‘at hand’ means nigh,
near. Jesus began to preach this at the
beginning of His ministry and continued
until the end. It was a major theme of
His preaching.
Jesus Preached The
Kingdom
o Matt 4:23
o 23 And Jesus went about all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, and
preaching the gospel of the
kingdom, and healing all manner of
sickness and all manner of disease
among the people.
o In His Galilean ministry He talked
about the kingdom.
He Preached It In Sermon
On The Mount
o Matthew 5:3,10,19,20; 6:10,13,33; 7:21This was the most famous of his preaching
time and He spoke of His kingdom (the
church), often.
o Matt 4:25
o 25 And there followed him great
multitudes of people from Galilee, and
from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem,
and from Judaea, and from beyond
Jordan.
o Jesus preached the kingdom in all of
these places as well as in Samaria.
The Parable of The Sower
o Matt 13:18-23
o 18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
o 19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and
understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and
catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is
he which received seed by the way side.
o 20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the
same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy
receiveth it;
o 21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a
while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth
because of the word, by and by he is offended.
The Parable of The Sower
o Matt 13:18-23
o 22 He also that received seed among the thorns
is he that heareth the word; and the care of
this world, and the deceitfulness of riches,
choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
o 23 But he that received seed into the good
ground is he that heareth the word, and
understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and
bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some
sixty, some thirty.
Parable Of The Wheat &
Tares
o Matt 13:24-30
o 24 Another parable put he forth unto them,
saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto
a man which sowed good seed in his field:
o 25 But while men slept, his enemy came and
sowed tares among the wheat, and went his
way.
o 26 But when the blade was sprung up, and
brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares
also.
o 27 So the servants of the householder came
and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow
good seed in thy field? from whence then
hath it tares?
Parable Of The Wheat &
Tares
o Matt 13:24-30
o 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done
this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou
then that we go and gather them up?
o 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up
the tares, ye root up also the wheat with
them.
o 30 Let both grow together until the harvest:
and in the time of harvest I will say to the
reapers, Gather ye together first the tares,
and bind them in bundles to burn them: but
gather the wheat into my barn.
Mustard Seed & Leaven
Parable
o Matt 13:31-33
o 31 Another parable put he forth unto them,
saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a
grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and
sowed in his field:
o 32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but
when it is grown, it is the greatest among
herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds
of the air come and lodge in the branches
thereof.
o 33 Another parable spake he unto them; The
kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a
woman took, and hid in three measures of
meal, till the whole was leavened.
Wheat & Tares Explained
o Matt 13:38-43
o 38 The field is the world; the good
seed are the children of the kingdom;
but the tares are the children of the
wicked one;
o 39 The enemy that sowed them is the
devil; the harvest is the end of the
world; and the reapers are the angels.
o 40 As therefore the tares are gathered
and burned in the fire; so shall it be in
the end of this world.
Wheat & Tares Explained
o Matt 13:38-43
o 41 The Son of man shall send forth his
angels, and they shall gather out of his
kingdom all things that offend, and them
which do iniquity;
o 42 And shall cast them into a furnace of
fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of
teeth.
o 43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as
the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Jesus Said Christians Can Fall
o In Matthew 13:28-43- Jesus teaches that it
is possible for a citizen of His kingdom (the
church) to fall away but still be considered
as a citizen of the kingdom (tares). It is true
that there are hypocrites in the Lord’s
church, and sometimes they go
undiscovered in this life, but Jesus assured
all that their wickedness does not escape
the notice of God (who will deal with them
at the end of time).
Jesus Concludes
o Matt 13:44-48
o 44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like
unto treasure hid in a field; the which
when a man hath found, he hideth,
and for joy thereof goeth and selleth
all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
o 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like
unto a merchant man, seeking goodly
pearls:
o 46 Who, when he had found one pearl
of great price, went and sold all that
he had, and bought it.
Jesus Concludes
o Matt 13:44-48
o 47 Again, :the kingdom of heaven is like
unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and
gathered of every kind
o 48 Which, when it was full, they drew to
shore, and sat down, and gathered the
good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
o Matt 13:52
o 52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every
scribe which is instructed unto the
kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that
is an householder, which bringeth forth out
of his treasure things new and old.
Jesus Talks Of Priceless
Nature Of His Kingdom
o It is worth selling all you have to gain it.
o It is worth everything you may give up to be
a citizen in it.
o It is a kingdom for all mankind.
o This kingdom is made up of Jew and
Gentile, bond and free, male and female and
all are one in Christ.
o This kingdom has Jesus as King and he
reigns over it now. It is his church.
Foundation Of The
Kingdom
o Matt 16:13-19
o 13 When Jesus came into the coasts of
Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of
man am?
o 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John
the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias,
or one of the prophets.
o 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I
am?
o 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou
art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Foundation Of The
Kingdom
o Matt 16:13-19
o 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him,
Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and
blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my
Father which is in heaven.
o 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art
Peter, and upon this rock I will build my
church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail
against it.
o 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the
kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt
bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and
whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven.
Foundation Of The Church
o The kingdom, the church, is built on the
foundation that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the
living God.
o If He was just a man, He would have no more
importance than any of us. But He was God in
the flesh.
o Peter would be the one who would open the door
first to the Jews (Acts 2) and the Gentiles (Acts
10).
o Notice how Jesus referred to it (the keys of the
kingdom). What would be bound in the Lord’s
kingdom would be what was already bound in
heaven and whatever was loosed would be what
was already loosed in heaven.
The Lord’s Church
o Was established on the day of Pentecost
(Acts 2).
o In the town of Jerusalem according to
prophecy.
o About the year 33 AD
o Jesus is the head of His church and He is
the King of His Kingdom.
o There is only one of them not 400.
Jesus Prophesied The
Kingdom
o Mark 9:1
o 9 And he said unto them, Verily I say
unto you, That there be some of them
that stand here, which shall not taste
of death, till they have seen the
kingdom of God come with power.
o The kingdom would come when the
power came and some of them alive
then would see it come with power.
Jesus Prophesied The
Kingdom
o Matt 10:6-7
o 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the
house of Israel.
o 7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The
kingdom of heaven is at hand.
o He told his apostles to preach the
coming of the kingdom to the Israelites
and not to the Gentiles yet. The Jew
first and also to the Greek (Mk.
16:15,16).
Jesus Prophesied The
Kingdom
o Matt 24:14
o 14 And this gospel of the kingdom
shall be preached in all the world for
a witness unto all nations; and then
shall the end come.
o He called it the gospel of the
kingdom and it was to be preached
to all before the end comes.
Jesus Prophesied
o New terms of entrance into the kingdom
Mark 16:15-16
o 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all
the world, and preach the gospel to
every creature.
o 16 He that believeth and is baptized
shall be saved; but he that believeth
not shall be damned.
o Anyone can be a citizen of this
kingdom. You do not have to be a
natural born Jew.
Jesus Prophesied
o The Jews were no longer His chosen people.
o Matt 23:37-38
o 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the
prophets, and stonest them which are sent
unto thee, how often would I have gathered
thy children together, even as a hen gathereth
her chickens under her wings, and ye would
not!
o 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
o Why be looking for the restoration of Israel as
a nation in Palestine? The Jews rejected the
Messiah and He has an established kingdom for
all (Jew and Gentile) to come into. It is the
Lord’s church.
The Kingdom Has Come
o 1 Cor 12:13
o 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body,
whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond
or free; and have been all made to drink into one
Spirit.
o Gal 3:28-29
o 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither
bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye
are all one in Christ Jesus.
o 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed,
and heirs according to the promise.
o Col 3:11
o 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision
nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor
free: but Christ is all, and in all.
Called Into One Body
o 1 Cor. 12:13- “baptized into one body”
o Eph. 4:4- “there is one body…”
o Eph. 1:22,23- “He is the head of the body,
the church…”
o Gal. 3:28- “all one in Christ…”
o Gal. 3:27- “as many of you as have been
baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
o All mankind is called into one body, the
Lord’s church (His kingdom). We get into
that kingdom by being baptized into Christ
for remission of sins (Acts 2:38).
Jesus Preached The
Fulfillment Of OT Prophecy
o Isa 2:2-3
o 2 And it shall come to pass in the last days,
that the mountain of the Lord's house
shall be established in the top of the
mountains, and shall be exalted above the
hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
o 3 And many people shall go and say, Come
ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the
Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob;
and he will teach us of his ways, and we
will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall
go forth the law, and the word of the Lord
from Jerusalem.
Daniel 2:44
•
And in the days of these kings
shall the God of heaven set up a
kingdom, which shall never be
destroyed: and the kingdom shall
not be left to other people, but it
shall break in pieces and consume
all these kingdoms, and it shall
stand for ever.
44
Daniel 2 Prophecy
• Daniel interpreted the king of Babylon’s
dream. He prophesies of five kingdoms.
Four earthly and one everlasting. The
four earthly kingdoms are Babylon- MedoPersia- Greece- Rome. In the days of the
last kingdom, Rome, the everlasting
kingdom would be established. Luke 2:1sets the time line for the rest of the NT as
the days of the last kingdom (Caesar
Augustus- Rome).

o Joel 2:28 ff; Acts 2:17f; Heb. 1:2 and 1
Peter 1:20 teach that the “last days” are
here. Joel 2 is the text of Peter’s sermon on
Pentecost. He said, “this is that which was
spoken by the prophet Joel”. What was
happening then was what Joel prophesied ?
Jesus Refused Kingship
o John 12:12-16
o 12 On the next day much people that
were come to the feast, when they
heard that Jesus was coming to
Jerusalem,
o 13 Took branches of palm trees, and
went forth to meet him, and cried,
Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel
that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Jesus Refused Kingship
o John 12:12-16
o 14 And Jesus, when he had found a
young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
o 15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy
King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.
o 16 These things understood not his
disciples at the first: but when Jesus
was glorified, then remembered they
that these things were written of him,
and that they had done these things
unto him.
Jewish View Of The
Messiah
o He would reestablish Israel as an earthly
kingdom ( Acts 1:6- “will you restore Israel
at this time”- even His apostles ).
o John 6:15
o 15 When Jesus therefore perceived that
they would come and take him by
force, to make him a king, he departed
again into a mountain himself alone.
o Jesus would not accept kingship on
their terms but He is the king after the
lineage of David.
Jesus Refutes This View
o He would not set up a kingdom on this earth. His
kingdom was spiritual and is His church.
o John 18:35-38
o 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own
nation and the chief priests have delivered
thee unto me: what hast thou done?
o 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this
world: if my kingdom were of this world,
then would my servants fight, that I should
not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my
kingdom not from hence.
Jesus Refutes This View
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art
thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou
sayest that I am a king. To this end was
I born, and for this cause came I into
the world, that I should bear witness
unto the truth. Every one that is of the
truth heareth my voice.
o 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?
And when he had said this, he went out
again unto the Jews, and saith unto
them, I find in him no fault at all.
o
37
Who Is Greatest In
Kingdom?
o Mark 10:37-44- James and John ask of Jesus
that they have a position of prominence in
the kingdom. Jesus tells them it is not His to
give. He then tells all the apostles that the
one who would be greatest in His kingdom
must be a servant. Christ is the only king.
His is not a political kingdom with positions
granted by the king to special people. The
greatest in His kingdom are those who are
servants. (vs. 42-45).
o Matt 26:51-57
o 51 And, behold, one of them which were
with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew
his sword, and struck a servant of the high
priest's, and smote off his ear.
o 52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again
thy sword into his place: for all they that
take the sword shall perish with the sword.
o 53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to
my Father, and he shall presently give me
more than twelve legions of angels?
o 54 But how then shall the scriptures be
fulfilled, that thus it must be?
o Matt 26:51-57
o 55 In that same hour said Jesus to the
multitudes, Are ye come out as against
a thief with swords and staves for to
take me? I sat daily with you teaching
in the temple, and ye laid no hold on
me.
o 56 But all this was done, that the
scriptures of the prophets might be
fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook
him, and fled.
o 57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus
led him away to Caiaphas the high
priest, where the scribes and the elders
were assembled.
What Jesus Did Not Teach
o Jesus said nothing about anything calledRapture (the word is not in the bible)
o He taught nothing about a period called- The
Tribulation (tribulation is persecution and is not a
period but what all who are godly face daily)
o He taught nothing about a battle of Armageddon
o He taught nothing of a physical, political
kingdom set up on this earth.
o He taught nothing of a national regathering of
the Jews in Palestine to possess their land.
o He taught His second coming- not three or four
returns.
Origin Of The Rapture
Doctrine
 1830- James Darby
 Prior to 1830 no church taught any such
doctrine, still not a part of any denominations
creed. Widespread now- People follow men
into heresy w/o questioning- Why? See 1
Thess. 5:21- “prove all things hold fast what is
good.” (Search the scriptures- if not
authorized by God’s word reject it) Eph. 5:11.
 Similar to most recent new doctrine of Billy
Sunday – the sinners prayer for salvation1930- later refined by Billy Graham- nowhere
was anyone saved by “praying through” in the
Bible. No doctrine of Rapture in the Bible
either- it is manmade- reject it !(Gal. 1:8-10).
Man-Made Heresy
 Jesus never taught that Israel would be
regathered and would become a nation
again. He never taught His kingdom
would be a literal kingdom established on
this earth before the end of time. He
never taught He would reign on the literal
throne of David.
 All of these false-teachings are heresy that
men have devised to lead people away
from Christ not to Him.
Jesus Taught
o His kingdom was not of this world (Jn.
18:36).
o There would be no earthly government in
His kingdom (Mk. 10:34ff)
o His kingdom is the church (Matt.
16:18,19).
o Israel’s house would be left desolate (Mt.
23). Jerusalem and Judaism would be
destroyed in 70 AD (Mt. 24:1-35).
o Jesus spoke the truth.
What Apostles Said
o Col 1:13
o 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of
darkness, and hath translated us into the
kingdom of his dear Son:
o Heb 12:28
o 28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which
cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby
we may serve God acceptably with reverence
and godly fear:
o Rev 1:9
o 9 I John, who also am your brother, and
companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom
and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle
that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and
for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
What Apostles Said
o Acts 28:22-23
o 22 But we desire to hear of thee what
thou thinkest: for as concerning this
sect, we know that every where it is
spoken against.
o 23 And when they had appointed him a
day, there came many to him into his
lodging; to whom he expounded and
testified the kingdom of God,
persuading them concerning Jesus,
both out of the law of Moses, and out
of the prophets, from morning till
evening.
The Apostles Preached
o They were in the kingdom
o That all Christians were in the kingdom
o That the kingdom was already in
existence in the first century.
o That they were not waiting for the
kingdom to come.
o They preached the kingdom as a part of
the gospel message delivered to them by
the Holy Spirit.
Consequences To Error
 Jesus did what He came to do. His
church was established on the day of
Pentecost, in Jerusalem about the year 33
AD. His church is His kingdom. They are
one and the same. His kingdom is not of
this world.
 To teach the restoration of Israel to their
land and the establishment of a future
kingdom before the end of time, it to
teach that Jesus failed the first time and
came at the wrong time.
What Men Teach
• The doctrine of Premillenialism teaches
that we are in a “parenthesis period”
called the “church age.” They teach that
the establishment of the Lord’s kingdom
is yet future and Christians should serve
Jesus during this period in whatever
church they wish (it does not make any
difference as long as the church honors
Jesus). They teach that it is all about the
future kingdom not the church. They lie
when they teach this and they impugn
the integrity and deity of Jesus and His
plain teachings.
Why Can’t All Teach The
Same
• Why can’t we all teach and practice what Jesus taught?
• Why would anyone teach anything else?
• Gal 1:6-8
• 6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him
that called you into the grace of Christ unto
another gospel:
• 7 Which is not another; but there be some that
trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of
Christ.
• 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel unto you than that
which we have preached unto you, let him be
accursed.
The Words Of Jesus
o John 6:63
o the words that I speak unto you, they are
spirit, and they are life.
o May we all teach and abide in the doctrine
of Christ and accept that the kingdom and
the church are the same and the Lord has
established one church, it is His, and when
one is baptized into Christ for remission of
sins, the Lord adds them to His church (Acts
2:38-47).
