HOCKEY
What is hockey all about?
Hockey is a fast moving game that is played by two opposing teams
made up of attackers ,midfielders , defenders and a goalkeeper. For a
team to play hockey well they need to work as a team and participate at
their best.
What are the positions?
Attackers: They attack the opposition and try to score goals ,they are
one of the most important players on the field.Attackers aren’t
supposed to go back into the defence area.
Midfielders: The midfielders have to be the fittest and the fastest
because they must run backwards and forwards to help and retrieve
the ball, midfielders will usually help get the ball up to the attackers.
Defenders: The defenders have to basically defend their
goal and try to get the ball up to the midfielder so that they
can give the ball to the attackers and then the attackers will
try their best to score a goal.
What equipment/gear is needed?
KICKER: a protective device worn by the goalkeeper and fastened over
the front and sides of the shoe to allow him or her to kick the ball.
PITCH: the playing field for hockey measuring 91.40m by 55m
STICK: a hook-shaped device made from wood and/or composite
materials)with a flat face on the left side for hitting the ball.
HELMET(goalie): used to protect head and face.
ELBOW PADS: used to protect the goalkeepers body.
LEG PADS: used to protect the goalkeepers body.
SHIN PADS: used to protect shins
SHOES: special shoes are worn to give good grip for running and
turning.
BALL: made of hard plastic, usually white and with a circumference of
approximately 230mm

Why you’ll love watching Hockey
Hockey is a game based on speed, tactics and teamwork. Hockey is
hugely popular throughout the Commonwealth, which means some of
the world’s best players will be representing their country. These fastpaced games will probably have you on the edge of your seat, nailbiting until the end of the game. Suspension cards are given for
warnings and suspensions. A green card results in an automatic two
minute suspension,a yellow card is a minimum five minute suspension
and a red card is an immediate suspension for a minimum of 16 days.
Hockey is a core sport and must be played throughout the
Commonwealth.
Penalty Corner
Penalty corner:
1. In a penalty corner, the ball is placed on the goal line at least 10
yards from the nearest goal post. One attacking player hits the ball to a
teammate just outside the striking circle line. No shot goal may be
taken until the ball is stopped or comes to rest on the ground outside of
the circle. All attackers must be outside the circle before the hit is
taken.
