Study Objective
To compare safety and vault measurements in
pre-operative Visante OCT images using the
PIOL template with post-operative Visante
OCT images of the same eyes using the
prescribed PIOL.
Ass. Prof. Dr. Camille BUDO
Study Methods
• Records of patients who had Phakic IOL implantation and
had both pre and post-operative Visante scans were
reviewed.
• Scans of 56 eyes from 33 patients were qualified for
inclusion.
• For each eye, one pre-operative scan had the template
placed by the Principal Investigator (CB).
• The following measurements were made for both pre and
post-operative eyes:
– Safety measurements at 0 degrees, center and 180
degrees
– Central vault measurements

Implantation simulation

Discussion
• Safety measurements pre-op are smaller than
post-op – conservative approach; template
placed higher compared to actual PIOL
position
• Vault measurements pre-op are larger than
post-op – confirms high placement position of
template
• Medium correlation between predicted and
actual vault may be due to natural
physiological changes of the crystalline lens

CONCLUSION
• First experience with the Visante™ OCT phakic
IOL simulation tool is promising.
• The results have shown high correlation between
predicted clearance of the PIOL to the
endothelium and the actual outcome.
• There is a learning curve in placing the template.
In this study the templates have been placed
higher than the actual implant position.
• The Visante™ OCT software enables the surgeon
to optimise the template placement.
