So who was the best/most influential leader and why?

Pope Gregory 1st

  He increased the power of the Pope/Church in Europe   Papacy became secular The Church gains more political power over European kings Supports his Christian followers     Raised Armies Built Roads Treaty negotiating Financial and political backing of Christian Kings

Charles Martell (The Hammer)

 Political ruler but not called king;  Kept other empires at bay, but couldn’t really unite Germanic kingdoms  Paved the way for the Carolingian Dynasty

Charlemagne (Charles the Great!)

   Conquered Europe Brought all Germanic Tribes under one rule and one church   Christian Ruler Used the Papacy as a partner Crowned “Emperor” by Pope

Feudalism – system of government

 Basically it’s a system of exchange…  A King gives land in exchange for loyalty, military service, and protection of his people  The land is given to nobles (rich/powerful, elites)    Medieval Examples: Christian Kings and their nobles **Pope and Christian Kings  **loyalty for support of reign
