“To generate use-inspired knowledge
on social and cultural determinants of health
to prevent, reduce and eliminate
health disparities
in partnership with communities
of the Southwest.”

We are starting Year 5 of a 5 year long P20 award

We have 2 randomized control trials in their final phase, 1
main pilot completed, 3 second generation pilots in their final
phase, 6 studies in dissemination phase, and 6 additional
studies as incubators.

The competitive continuation application is under review, the
scientific review panel will meet on September 19 & 20, 2011.
Original health disparities research
Families Preparing the New Generation, a supplemental parent
education intervention to keepin’ it REAL. The RCT is being conducted
with two cohorts of parents (N=464) and 7th grade youth (N=811) in 9
schools.
Living in 2 Worlds (L2W) adapted keepin’ it REAL with urban American
Indian students. The RCT is being conducted with two cohorts of 7th
grade youth (N=197) in 5 schools.
SIRC has launched four pilots studies with findings indicating that:
(a) Chinese American females had the highest depressive symptoms
sustained across 7 years;
(b) juvenile female offenders with higher family involvement had
fewer lifetime sexual partners compared to juvenile male offenders;
(c) obese Latino adolescents participating in Every Little Step Counts
increased insulin sensitivity and weight-specific quality of life;
(d) complementary and alternative medicines are used first by
Mexican American mothers in their child’s asthma management.
Research Dissemination
In Years 1-4, research findings have been translated and
disseminated through:
 105 published articles in peer-reviewed journals
12 published community-based research reports;
 406 presentations at academic conferences, in the
community, in school classrooms, and internationally
 43 Brown Bag and Colloquia lectures
 4 annual conferences
 Health literacy website in English and Spanish.
Community Engagement & Outreach
SIRC has successfully established innovative partnerships
between the center and community groups/organizations in
order to implement joint innovative minority health and health
disparities research through dynamic interaction,
collaboration, and continued participation with community
partners.
 30 member Community Advisory Board (CAB)
 Community Executive Council
 3 CAB subcommittees
CAB members have actively participated in 25 meetings from
2006-2011, providing direction for research to address
community needs and ensure findings are translated to
practitioners in an appropriate manner.
Research Education & Training
The number and capacity of researchers and professionals from health
disparity populations and serving health disparities populations have
been increased through culturally competent education and training.
 9 early career faculty fellows
 3 post-doctoral fellows,
 9 doctoral interns,
 8 undergraduates,
 2 Community Research Fellows
 Fellows and interns have also received intensive training through the
Journal Club, Writing Workshops, Data Analysis Clinics, and Advanced
Statistical Analysis Work Groups. I
 90 central-city minority youth received half-day health disparities
workshops
 8 Professional Development Courses online.


Sustain a research infrastructure that expands conceptual, methodological
and statistical capacity for health disparities research

Develop and support the expertise of Center participants regarding the role
of social and cultural determinants of health that interact at different
ecodevelopmental levels—family, peers, school, and community—to
influence the creation, reduction, and elimination of health disparities

Maintain ongoing mechanisms for disseminating the Center’s research
findings to the community, agencies and scientific community

Coordinate research expertise and resources with the Research Education
and Training Core

Collaborate with community partners and the Community Engagement/
Outreach Core to generate new health disparities research questions and
initiatives, ensuring that the research agenda and methods reflect community
needs and priorities as well as the best existing science.
