Overview of a Credential Program

   2 & 3 semester programs 2 Semester Program (full time) - Each semester includes coursework and student teaching.

3 Semester Program - Student teaching in the final semester. Desirable for those who continue working part time until student teaching.

Student Teaching

 Two placements at two different levels:   Primary grades (K-3) Intermediate grades (4-6) – can be through 8 th grade if in a self-contained classroom   Middle School High School SDSU College of Education, Office of Student Services

Prerequisites Common to Basic Credential Programs

     CSET/CBEST Examinations-take early (begin late in junior year) Certificate of Clearance – apply 6-12 months in advance of program admission (applications at EBA 259) GPA – 2.67 cumulative (all college coursework) or 2.75 last 60 units Tuberculin clearance to be valid while enrolled in program (Health Services) Dual application – apply to the university for post graduate study AND apply to department SDSU College of Education, Office of Student Services

ALWAYS continue to check the program website for information regarding application due dates.

Work toward completion of prerequisite courses ED 451 and SPED 450. Register to take the CBEST (and CSET if needed) exams (if these were not completed in Jr. year).

Stop by the Office of Student Services in (EBA 259) and pick up information about applying for a Certificate of Clearance.

APLE Assumption Program of Loans for Education

What is APLE?

 Is a state-funded competitive teacher incentive program administered by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC)  The program is designed to encourage outstanding students to become teachers and serve in critical teacher shortage area in CA public K-12 schools.

 Under APLE, CSAC may assume $11,000 $19,000 in outstanding college loans.

 Agriculture (7-12)        Business (7-12) Education Specialist Instruction (M/M & M/S) Foreign Language Low Income School (K-12) Low Performing School (K-12 in lowest 20 th % of the API) Mathematics (7-12) Music      Reading Science (Life/Physical) (7-12) Schools with High Percentage of Emergency Permit Teachers (K-12) Schools Serving Rural Areas (K-12) State Special School (K-12)

APLE

Eligibility Criteria  Have received or been approved to receive student loans (no parent loans) through the university  Be enrolled in an undergraduate or credential program  Have completed a minimum of 60 semester (90 quarter) undergraduate units  Be enrolled at least half-time (6units) each semester  Maintain satisfactory academic progress (2.5 GPA)  Must apply prior to completing the coursework to obtain an initial teaching credential Assumption Benefits  Participants must provide four consecutive years of full-time, or part-time equivalent, teaching services in the area agreed upon at an eligible CA K-12 school.

  $2,000 after the first year $3,000 after the second year   $3,000 after the third year $3,000 after the fourth year  CSAC will pay a bonus amount of $1,000 for each year of teaching service provided in math, science, and special education in a low-performing school. Lowest 60% of the API.

 CSAC will pay a bonus amount of $1,000 for each year of teaching service provided in math, science, and special education in a low-performing school. Lowest 20% of the API. For a maximum of $19,000.
