Discussion
Who are your favourites?
Why do you like them, why don’t you
like them?
What are some of the characteristics or
skills of the winners/the losers
How did you recognise these skills
(verbals, non-verbals, actions and
responses)
Explanation (copy please)








Research shows that people that are able to cope
with the challenges, changes, successes, failures, or
disappointments that happen in their lives have a
range of skills that are linked to a number of senses:
Sense of worth
Sense of belonging
Sense of control
Sense of sense of purpose
Sense of future
Sense of humour
OFTEN the winners of the reality TV shows display
these types of characteristics.
Week 1 of the challenge!




What’s happening this week?
Meet the 6 young contestants who will
be living in the Strongbox house,
The 3 judges who will be rating them,
and the resident expert.
Watch Chapter 1.
Student booklet



Please look at resource 1.2.
The rating scale from low to med to
high will be used throughout the unit.
There are tips given to assist you in
understanding and completing ratings
yourself.
Rating first impressions



Using the photos to assist, write about your first
impression of each of the contestants. Use the tips to
help you!
In your folder answer:First impressions when I got it right:
Write an example
When I got it wrong:
Write an example
Sharing: your answers
What made you change your mind about
your first impression.
Sometimes you may get it wrong because
you don’t know what the other person
is thinking or you don’t understand their
perspective. This often changes as we
get to know people better.
Homework



Write down 3 words that describe how
you would feel if you were chosen for a
reality TV show.
What were you thinking to choose
those words?
How would you act or what might you
do in the show, if you are feeling that
way.

may miss cues or look for different
characteristics.




Self worth is how you think about and value
yourself.
Self worth is influenced by many factors but
the most important is how you regard
yourself and the things you say to yourself
(self talk)
How do we build self worth?
Robber/ Builder statements





The things that people say to themselves that make them feel
good about themselves or not.
These statements are based on how we view ourselves and our
world.
It is not things that people say to you that rob or build your self
worth but
it is how you interpret what others say and the subsequent
things you say to yourself.
That is: WE HAVE ATTITUDE BY CHOICE.
Brainstorm some robber/builder thoughts from everyday life.
Robber and Builder thoughts

Instructions for the challenge:
Each group has received an envelope containing individual
words which are to be dealt out equally and randomly to each
person in the team.
Each person should lay their words face up on the table in front
of them.
The task is to construct 4 sentences from the scrambled words.
You must do this without talking, gesturing or signalling to each
other.
The sentences must be constructed in the centre of the table
with all members participating.
The dealer must make the first move but after that the group
should decide how to progress.
Teams must devise their own strategy without talking.
The first team to unscramble its words is the winner. And the
challenge is over.
Challenge review:

What do you think now?
How did you cope?
Why was it difficult to do without talking?
What skills did you need to complete the task?
Did you group work as a team, did everyone
participate?
Is it better to work as a group or by yourself?
What makes working in a group hard? What makes
working in a group better?
Staying calm: sense of control



Read and note please
A good sense of control means that you know that you have
choices in how you interpret situations and consequently how
you feel about them and how you respond to those situations.
Stress is a common experience for most people. Individuals
respond to stress both physically and psychologically. Some
stress is good for you as it readies the body for action and can
improve performance and enjoyment. However too much can
impair performance.

Strategies for reducing stress include: planning, time
management, problem solving, relaxation, and seeking support.

Self talk plays a major role in managing stress and developing
good sense of control.
Relaxation techniques.









Activity: Stand up and sit down 4 times.
Find your pulse. First beat is zero, count for 15 sec., multiply by
4. Record score (bpm)
Watch episode 4.
Discuss: being part of a group can be stressful where there are
expectations about the tasks each member has to do?
We will now watch the same tape as what was used in the
strongbox episode, please follow the instructions.
Complete breathing Relaxation exercise.
Was your pulse rate different before and after the exercise?
Pulse rate increases when we are stressed/anxious, deep
breathing is one way to counter this effect.
You will be allocated 1 of the 4 techniques. Select a leader to
guide you through completing one of the techniques now.
Discuss in your group how it worked for you?
Sharing your technique



Each group will explain to everyone
about their chosen technique. (Purpose,
how you did it , did it work)
Which technique did we like the best,
why?
Brainstorm: What techniques do you
use for coping with stressful situations,
what do you do to relieve tension?
Relaxation techniques





Help us to gain a sense of control
Regular relaxation practice may be used to
prevent adverse reactions to stress.
Different strategies work for different people
Positive Self talk is the most useful in
reducing stressful situations.
Homework: read and highlight pages 16-28.






Discuss: Adam’s and Rona’s response.
When in the initial (usually emotional) reaction condition, it is
not always a good condition to make a decision about how to
handle the situation. Why not?
So we seek help from others.
Discuss: seeking help from others
people of all ages seek advice from others, and not just family
and friends but often anonymous sources such as telephone,
internet or magazines.
Brainstorm: what do you need to consider when giving a friend
advice.
Note: remember that there is always others who have to be
considered because the decision will impact them.

purpose in a different way, but suddenly, things are changing and for
some of the contestants, things are falling apart. Winning for some is
no longer their main purpose.


Summary: Planning







Copy please:
Planning is really important.
We become stressed sometimes when we don’t seem
to have enough time to do everything we need or
want to do.
Although planning is helpful, we still need to be
flexible with our schedules because unexpected
events happen. (this is why you can negotiate
extensions for assignments).
Maintaining a balance of work and fun is important!!

the obstacles and barriers to achieving goals is
inevitable.
How obstacles or setbacks to goals may provide
opportunities for an alternate pathway or new
direction.
