Enterprise is to plan for the future by taking action now. We strive to make a positive impact on our community through project-based learning, collaborating with various community members, and by using all resources made available to us. We are a group of charged, capable young citizens who share a common interest: acquiring the knowledge necessary to implement innovative ideas that will benefit both the community and ourselves. WHAT WE HAVE DONE! The P.E.A.K. class has been introduced to the beautiful Swedetown Creek watershed by sitting and sketching what we see along with frequent trips to study the banks. We also learned how to use vernier probes, pictured at right to measure water quality. The chemistry of water deals with the fundamental chemical property and information about water. We plan on going to Swedetown to test the following: • pH Water Pollutants are the • Water temperature chemicals that affect water • Nitrate and Phosphate quality. The leading causes of • Water Oxygen impairment include: • Conductivity • PCB in fish tissue and • Water speed water column. • Clarity and turbidity • Mercury in fish tissue. • Dioxin produced from car exhaust Over 70% of all Michigan's streams are impaired with these chemicals. Future Endeavors We will carry on our water chemistry work at Swedetown Creek, during which we will test for pH, turbidity, conductivity, oxygen levels, temperature, and water velocity. We will also be looking for benthic macro-invertebrates. Stream Channel Analysis • Bank Height We will continue to collect and • Width and Depth analyze data and report records of • Stream velocity the threats to the Swedetown • Stream Discharge Creek stake holders, DNR, and EPA.
