Bellwork: Safety review – copy the safety wheel into your notebook then list the safety concern identified by each symbol

Nature of science Pretest:

Put all answers on your answer sheet DO NOT write on the test You should use pencil but you may use pen.

Question 11: A farmer wants to see which temperature is best for seed growth. He plants one set of seeds at 25 degrees C and another set at 20 degrees C. He checks the plants everyday and measures the height of the plant for a month and records his data. What is his independent variable?

    A. The amount of growth of the seed B. The type of seed he planted C. The temperature the seeds are grown at D. The time of day he measures the growth  When you are finished, turn your test over and begin lab equipment word scramble.

Bellwork: Name the following pieces of lab equipment

Draw this table in your notes then Complete using p. 581 and 582 in your textbook Length Mass Volume Temperature Definition SI Unit / other units Tool used to measure

What do we measure using a graduated cylinder?

 Graduated cylinders measure volume – the amount of space matter takes up  You can measure the volume of liquids or solids  The SI unit for volume is the Liter.

How do we measure volume of a liquid?

 To measure the volume of a liquid:  1. put graduated cylinder on a flat surface  2. Make sure to read the scale at eye level.

 3. The surface of the liquid will be curved in the graduated cylinder. Read at the bottom of the curve— known as the meniscus

What is the volume?

How do we measure the volume of a solid object?

 Measure the change in a liquids height after you add the solid object to the cylinder. - Displacement

What do we measure with a ruler?

 We use meter sticks and rulers to measure length – the distance between 2 points  The SI unit for length is the meter  To measure with a ruler make sure you line up the object carefully and find the closest line then estimate one more place.

How long is the leaf? Look carefully.

What do we measure with a triple beam balance?

 We use a triple beam balance to measure mass - The amount of matter in an object.

 The SI unit for mass is the gram

How do we use a triple beam balance?

 1. Make sure the balance is zeroed.—the pointer should be at zero when there is nothing in the pan.

 2. Place the object in the pan and move the rider one notch at a time away from the pan beginning with the largest rider.

 3. Once the pointer is back on zero, add the readings from all 3 riders to find the mass in grams

Find the mass – label the pan, zero line, riders

How do we convert metric units?

 Scientists use the International system (SI) units for the measurements of distance, volume, mass and temperature  You can change from one unit to another in the metric system by multiplying or dividing by a power of 10. (just move the decimal point)  Metric prefixes: are used to change the base units meter, liter, and gram.

Use the “King Henry’s” staircase below to move from the beginning prefix to the ending prefix. The number of stairs you move = the number of times you move the decimal point to smaller or larger units.

(King Henry died by drinking chocolate milk) Example convert 5cm to mm 5.0 cm -> move one place right to milli = 50 mm.

1. Find the volume of the sphere:

 2. the diagram shows a portion of a triple beam balance, what is the mass?

3.

 Convert 879 meters to km  Convert 4 L to mL  Convert 3 grams to mg 
