Grant vs. Contract vs.?

• • • • • Our office processes a number of agreements including grants, contracts, service agreements, MOU’s, data sharing, etc.

RSS Top Ten Tips for Success

#1 – Know the Rules!

• • • • • • University policies and procedures Collective agreements Employment agreements College level requirements/processes Budgetary requirements Are you eligible to apply for and hold research funds?

#2 – Find Research Funding

• • • • • • • Know what resources are available locally Watch for e-mail INSIDER Check ORS web site Talk to your peers or COS Pivot Attend information sessions Consider type of research funding: – Grant – – Contract Service contract Catalyst Centre and industry liaison

#3 – Prepare your Proposal

• • • • • • READ the application guidelines and follow them!

Ask for clarification up front Match the priorities and requirements of the sponsor or program If contract or service agreement, or major funding proposal (multiple universities, partners) touch base with us up front Consider peer review of 1 st supports draft and college level Check ORS minimum processing times

#4 – Prepare your Budget

• • • • • Review the sponsor or program’s eligible costs!

Be realistic and don’t overinflate Consider time commitments Include indirect costs Think outside the box (e.g. Project Manager?)

#5 – Engage your CRM & ADR (early) • • • • • Help with preparing applications (as applicable) When you can’t meet the posted minimum processing times When you would like to request reduced indirect costs Approval at college level is required first ORS requires supporting documentation from ADRs in these cases!

#6 – Submit to ORS (early)

• • • • • Again, review ORS minimum processing times Complete and submit with an “OR-5 Form” Need an internal budget and workplan as minimum Letters of support – ask early In person University Centre 437 or electronically to [email protected]

#7 – Track your Funding

• • • • • • Send agreements/contracts to ORS We consult with faculty on key terms/considerations Read your award agreement and follow it!
