Objective
The conference aims to provide an informal atmosphere for the discussion of research in semiconductor optoelectronics. To preserve the informality of the meeting, attendance will be limited to about 100.
Contributions will be sought in the form of oral papers (15 minutes including discussion) and poster papers.
Abstracts (1A4 page in a form suitable for direct reproduction) should be sent no later than 1 February 2009 to:

NB In order to ensure that printed versions are of the standard they would expect, authors are kindly requested
to send hard copies of any abstracts initially submitted via e-mail.
Contributions are invited on the following indicative topics:
1. Growth and fabrication including quantum well/ wire/dash and dot materials and devices.
2. Mid-infra-red semiconductor opto-electronics.
3. Micro-cavity and photonic bandgap effects in semiconductor optoelectronic devices.
4. Semiconductor lasers and optical sources including organic LEDS and lasers
5. Semiconductor-based THz sources , sensors and detectors
6. Theory and numerical simulations of semiconductor optoelectronic devices
7. Optical detectors, modulators amplifiers and switches .
9. All-optical and opto-electronic integrated circuits.
10. Semiconductor spintronics.
Focus Session :
At SIOE09 It is aimed to arrange a focus session on ‘ Photonics and the environment ‘ .
Contributions and /or suggestions of contributors of key note papers on this topic are welcomed.

Conference Information
Venue: Redwood Building, King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff, and Aberdare Hall, Corbett Road, Cardiff. Cardiff
is well situated with excellent rail, road and air links to all parts of the UK. The Redwood Building is opposite
Aberdare Hall across the road.
Conference registration will be held in Aberdare Hall from 5:30pm until 7:00pm on Monday 6 April 2009 and a
buffet dinner will be provided at 6:30pm. The technical sessions will begin at 8:30am on Tuesday 7 April
2009 ; the conference will close at approximately 12:30pm on Wednesday 8 April 2009 – followed by lunch.
Conference fees: The full conference fee (£200) includes all meals, light refreshments, the conference dinner and a
wine reception. To obtain the student registration rate (£150), student registration forms must be signed by their
supervisor. There is no VAT on conference fees.
NB: No payments can be refunded for cancellations received after 17 March 2009.
Accommodation: Accommodation will be available in the Big Sleep Hotel which is situated in the City centre and
is approximately twenty five minute walk from the venue.
The cost of a double or twin en-suite room will be £ 55 per person per night and includes a continental breakfast.
In order for a reservation to be made on your behalf, you must supply us with a credit card number. Each
delegate will be responsible for settling their hotel bill directly with the hotel when checking out.
Important: We must receive your room reservation before 27 February 2009 or a room cannot be guaranteed.
Conference Dinner: A conference dinner will be held on the evening of Tuesday 7 April 2009.
Parking: There is, limited, on-street parking available outside the Redwood Building for which you will have to
purchase special parking vouchers. Delegates who are staying in a local hotel may leave their car in the
hotel car park. A map containing the location of venue can be sent with joining instructions if required.
Working Language: The working language of the conference will be English which will be used for all printed
material, presentations and discussions.

Conference fee payments may be made by cheque sent with the registration form or by cash or traveller's cheque at
the conference registration desk, which will be situated in the Aberdare Hall. Cheques should be made payable to
University of Wales, Bangor and marked "for SIOE".
Payments from overseas should be made free of all bank charges and commissions, either by cheque in £ Sterling
drawn on a UK bank, or by cash or travellers cheques in pounds sterling, at the time of registration.
