Science - ISAs






The ISA is 25% of the Science GCSE and in general the area that
they can get the best marks.
Students will get an opportunity to sit 2 attempts in class and will be
invited back for a third attempt on Progress Monitoring day 3 if
they have underachieved.
Avoid students being away for the ISAs, they are completed under
high control in class time and comprise of 5 elements, if they miss
one element then this has a massive impact on their overall mark.
Parents can aid in these ISAs by ensuring they know when they take
place:
WC 6/1/14 - 19/1/14 This includes preparatory work in class and
WC 10/2/14
In addition the revision guides do contain some key points to revise
for the ISAs known as the 'How science works' sections.

achievement.

Attendance
•90% attendance means you were absent for one
day every two weeks or the equivalent of a month off
during the school year.
•80% attendance between Yr 7 -11 is equivalent to
missing a complete school year of education!

School Attendance
Good School attendance is a key factor in ensuring that children make the
most of their education.
The Government expects:


SCHOOLS to ensure every student has access to a full-time education to
which they are entitled.
PARENTS to fulfil their legal duty by ensuring their children attend school
regularly, with an expected attendance of 96% +.
Under existing legislation, each parent/carer commits an offence if a child
fails to attend school regularly and the absences are classed as ‘unauthorised’.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an unauthorised absence?

Any absence for which the school cannot or has not given permission.
Unauthorised leave in Term Time

School holiday dates are published well in advance and parents are expected to plan and
take their family holidays at this time. In exceptional circumstances only Head Teachers
have discretion to authorise leave, however, parents should be aware that this is not a legal
entitlement.
What is a Penalty Notice?

It is an alternative to prosecution, that does not usually require an appearance in Court, that
can help enforce an improvement in the student’s attendance.
Click to edit Master subtitle style
George Abbot School non sibi sed toti
Penalty Notices
When can a Penalty Notice be issued?

Where the parent has chosen to take their child on holiday during term time without
authorisation for 5 days or more.

Where a student is identified by police and EWS during a Truancy Patrol and who have
incurred unauthorised absence.

Where a student’s attendance is below 85% and there are 10 or more unauthorised sessions
in the previous 6 school weeks. These may include a student arriving late after the close of
registration.
What are the costs?

£60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but
within 28 days.
What happens if it is not paid?

The Local Authority is required to start legal proceedings against the recipient in the local
Magistrates Court for the original offence of failing to ensure the regular school attendance
of your child.
Who is liable for the Penalty Notice?

Each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised
absences.
