AVID is an ideal Innovative Program because it is:
• A schoolwide transformational approach that increases the
achievement of all students

AVID can be used as a stand-alone school
transformation model or as the cornerstone supporting a
multi-faceted strategy.

3. Describe the capacity your LEA/school has to ensure successful
implementation:
Successful AVID implementation requires the following capacities:
1. Leadership at the district and school levels committed to implementing
AVID with fidelity
2. An AVID Site Team for each school comprised of an Administrator, AVID
Coordinator/Teacher, Core Subject Teachers, and a School Counselor
3. Attendance at one of AVID’s Summer Institutes offered around the
country, including Chicago and Dallas
4. The addition of the AVID Elective to the Master Calendar
5. AVID students recruited and selected to begin in Fall 2011
6. Tutors recruited and trained to assist in AVID Elective class
7. Commitment to incorporating AVID methodologies in content area
classes across the school

In order to support districts and schools, AVID provides ongoing
coaching, training and support to its school sites to plan and
implement the system.

4. How will you integrate the specific Innovative Program into your school
culture and current transformation plan/Scope of Work?
AVID creates a school-wide college-going culture:
• School and district leaders set the vision and the tone that promotes
college readiness and high expectations for all students.
• Trained Site Team members mentor and support all teachers in
implementing AVID strategies, methodologies and resource materials
so all students in the school benefit.
• All classrooms are modeled on the AVID classroom to increase student
achievement and parent engagement across the entire school.
• AVID division staff and consultants provide ongoing coaching, training
and support to transform the culture.

6. How will you sustain this Innovative Program post RttT?
AVID is an extremely cost-effective solution that embeds sustainability into a
school through the methodologies and professional development that become
part of the school culture.
Implementation costs are frontloaded during the first three years of
implementation so that sustaining the program in the long run is affordable.
Funding sources can be used to sustain AVID, such as Title I, Title II, School
Improvement Grants, GEAR UP, and other local dollars.
AVID Center helps to sustain the program by providing member schools with:
• Divisional training events
• Ongoing Site Team Support
• Annual Certification Process
• Ongoing technical assistance from Program Managers and consultants

7. Describe any potential challenges or barriers with the mandatory professional
development and Innovative Program requirements for the framework you selected.
What strategies will your LEA/school implement to overcome these potential obstacles ?
In AVID’s experience there are no insurmountable barriers:
• AVID has developed a flexible implementation timeline to
accommodate start-up in Ohio
• There are Summer Institutes held in Chicago and Dallas, helping to
keep travel costs low
• The bulk of professional development takes place in the summer
• AVID offers numerous online training opportunities for easy access
without missed class time or substitute expenses
• Local Program Managers and consultants can provide technical
assistance and support by phone, e-mail or in-person.

The AVID College Readiness System was designed to increase the college readiness of all students in a school. AVID works because it:

Provides intensive support with in-class tutors
Creates a positive peer group for students
Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard
work and determination
In Ohio AVID schools, 99.2% of AVID students are enrolled in a “College Prep”
track of courses.

10. Why should your LEA/school be awarded an Innovative Programs
grant?
This is your chance to shine.
Tell them your story and the needs of your students.
Show your enthusiasm and commitment to AVID’s proven system.
Let them know why you believe in AVID to turn your school around.
Remember, the 41 lowest-performing schools may have
priority for these funds, so emphasize this reality if it applies.

Summer Institute registrations are optional in Year 3.
Tutor partnerships with local colleges and nonprofits can reduce costs as the number of AVID elective classes
increases. Middle schools with only 7th and 8th grades might not add a third elective class in year three so that
tutor costs would be $8,640 for years two and three.

Below are suggestions that districts or school sites might consider to offset
the costs of AVID implementation:
Scenario 1:
Deploy AVID in more than one school in the district and split the cost of the
AVID District Professional Service Fee of $9,000 Year 1 and $6,000 Year 2.

Scenario 2:
Identify and/or repurpose district funding (such as Title 1 or 2 funds, local
RTTT funding, or district professional development funding that could pay the
“Summer Institute Fee” or “Continuing Staff Development”) to supplement
Innovative Programs grant.
Scenario 3:
Partner with two-year colleges and/or other college access programs to lower
implementation costs, particularly the “Tutor Cost”.
Scenario 4:
Small and rural adjacent school districts, with school sites less than 300
students, could band together as a consortium of districts, perhaps through an
Educational Service Center, to share implementation costs where appropriate.
