Introduction to enzymes
• Enzymes are usually proteins
• Enzymes are catalysts
• In general, names end with suffix “ase”

Introduction to enzymes
Enzymes:
• increase the rate of a reaction
• not consumed by the reaction
• act repeatedly to increase the rate of reactions
• are often very “specific” for the substrate
Reactants also called “substrates” of enzyme
H.Özge Kızılsu
5
How enzyme work
• Enzymes physically interact with their substrates
• Substrates bind to the enzyme’s active site
• Enzyme reaction path:

6
How enzyme work
• Lock and Key Model
Substrate fits into an active site perfectly.

How enzyme work
• Activation energy is:
the energy required to start a reaction.
